View Full Version : How do you keep your LCD monitors from falling over?

When I get a new computer, I'm going to get a couple of LCD monitors as well. But my cats are constantly up on my desk and around my monitors and I'm afraid when I get the LCDs, they will knock them over. Any tips on how I can prevent that? (Aside from making the cats :dead: or whatever. ;) )
TIA!

squirt them with a water gun.

Yeah, not so much. :P Very great idea around my computer, phone, etc etc. And what about when I'm not here? :P lol

I'd recommend getting rid of the cats.

Thanks, you guys are a big help. :P Now someone who might actually know won't bother coming in cause they assume the people that have already posted told me. lol

See if there is a wall mounting kit available from the monitor maker. Or try attaching a fishing line to the base of the monitor where it adjusts up and down and a screw with a molly to the wall-that might help you keep it stand upright. (As last resort keep a dog on your desk that hates cats)!

Well, I'll still post anyway :P
Are you worried about the cats walking behind the monitors or trying to jump on top of them?
If you don't want the cats to go behind your monitor(s) then you should get a butterfly screensaver or something to keep their attention :P
I'd say your options depend on your desk... if you have a very narrow desk maybe you could wall mount the LCDs  If your desk is wide then you probably won't want them that far away from you.
I would recommend just putting some stuff behind the monitors to keep that cats out... like say a CD case rack or something maybe even an empty cardboard box. You may need to leave a few inches for ventilation tho... LCDs still heat up.
Mostly, I would recommend the trick we use for our Christmas tree... wire it to the wall. We've had cats climb the tree and nearly knock it down esp if one follows the other so we always wire it to the wall. This should stop them from knocking the monitors forward or side to side. Depending on what type of wall you've got, you'll want to get the appropriate fastener.
If you're not interested in that, then just weight down the bases... sandbags would do the trick...
How clumsy are your cats anyway? Or are they just malicious when it comes to your stuff? :throw:
Let us know what you do...

I'm glad that I taught my cat at an early age to stay off of my computer table (and tables in general in the house).
Yes... I did use the "water spray gun" technique to do this, but never around electronic equipment.
Pretty much all I have to say now is ... NO! DOWN!!! and she'll jump off whatever perch she knows I don't want her on now. :D

Get a piece of plywood.
Hammer several nails through it.
Place upside down around your monitor.
One wrong step, and the cats will avoid that table at all costs...

Yeah, I can get them off my desk pretty easily. I have an air pump that the needle broke off of, so I just use it. A pump or two and they scatter right off. lol But when we aren't home...

Actually, I've heard that putting packing tape sticky side up will make them never want to jump up there again. Of course, you should be around the first time, 'cause they're going to go wild.

:heh: They aren't malicious, no. Just clumsy. LOL We don't think they intentionally try and knock them over or anything, and not so much jumping on top of them (right now I have 2 huge monitors and that hasn't been a problem). But we're just worried the LCDs would be easy enough to tip over that if they do get up on the desk, they would brush up against them and they would fall backwards.
Unfortunately my desk is not facing the wall, so there is no way to mount or anchor them to the wall. we'll have to see about latching them to the thing they will sit on behind my desk or weighing down the bases or something.
Thanks. :)

Oh yeah, they REALLY hate anything stuck to their paws... I think some regular masking or cellophane tape does the trick tho... packing tape could take off a bit more fur than you'd want...

You can get a monitor arm that attaches to the back of the desk. It won't be knocked down if the cats bump it. A company named Ergotron makes some of them.

too expensive an option. Upside-down mouse traps will do it. If they step on them they will snap but not hurt the cat.

hoser's idea is elegant than mine, which is simply to bolt the monitors down.

Yeah, we'd thought about that too. Another option is to build a base out of wood for the bottom, so kind of prevent it from tipping over. Basically just extend the base and strap that down to the thing my monitors would sit on behind my desk.

I just duct taped my lcd monitor to my old monitor to keep it steady.
