My inkjet's going crappy (HP Deskjet 970),
and I figured it might be worthwhile to get a multifunction color laser (fax/copy/scan/print) for kicks

Are any good enough for pictures ? (8x10? on photo paper?)
Any other suggestions?
I'd prefer smaller than bigger, and would be nice to be <600-700 if possible

Color laser is crap for photos. The ideal setup would be B&W laser for everyday printing (HP), and inkjet for photos (Cannon). I'd also recommend against an all-in one machine - too prone to failure.

Laser alone is going to be bigger than most inkjets. I have a color laser and do photos elsewhere- like the local drugstore where quality is good and price is cheaper than doing it yourself once you include all the ink you use and photo papers.

I agree with Jeffbx and ZJ. Don't get a multi unless you absolutely have no space and need all the features.

Get a good B&W, if you need color for whatever, get another inkjet, and if you want photos, then go to the drugstore, or WalMart, or Costco, or Sam's Club, or a photo store, or whatever.

I looked long and hard at multi color lasers earlier this year and decided against it. Having 2 machines is a pain, but it lets me get the best of both worlds. One downside to the multi colors is that thy all have older print engines in them so you end up with fast black and white printing and slow color printing (24pages B&W/4 pages color per minute for example). THe newer color laser printers have newer engines that do black and white and color at the same fast speed, which is really nice. Depends on your needs though.

multifunctions give you all in one but almost aways sacrifice quality, both in print and in over all build. And if one part goes bad, you are stuck with a retarded unit.

A cheap HP 1020 class laser for straight document printing, and for photos canon is good, or some of the higher end HP photosmarts do really nice printing. I have an older 7960 that does wonderful black and white prints.

Color lasers do terrible photos, don't do photopaper, and the toner is very expensive.

OK.. you've convinced me enough..
what's a good cheap multifunction laser (B&W)(fax/copy/print/scan) then?

think every1 was was saying multi function is gonna be large no matter how you go.
color laser you would be happy with but dont expect photo quality. if your use to printing mostly black with a ink jet printer.. you'll be more than happy with the quality of a laser printer. if your printing school work, webpages, or playing around making flyers, cards etc. then get a color laser. I have a brother laser 1435 black only and havent missed color at all. but my next one will have color just incase. i want a multi also but the size is no way for me. i already have a fax and a scanner. it will have network and auto duplex tho.
