My wife and kid went to Big Lot earlier tonight. She took out her new phone (my Valentine's gift), the Sony Ericsson W810i, to check for time. Then she put it in her jacket pocket and somehow it dropped out. Once she realized that she came back to the aisles that she passed by but the phone was gone.

That sucks. You would think that she would have heard the thud of the phone falling out.

Ive lost more phones that you can imagine so i would suggest always having the replacement program with your carrier

It's not cost effective with the Assurion insurance because the deductible for mid-range/high-end phones is $110. Plus I usually get unlocked/unbranded phones and insurance won't cover it.

I lost my phone several times recently and it sickened me how nobody ever tried to return it to me. Are there no more decent people out there?
In fact, a couple weeks ago I found a lost phone on the cab and knowing how painful it is to lose all your contacts and trying not to become one of those a$$holes. I went through his contact list and called up "Mom" and told her the situation and asked to tell him to call me. Because he didn't have a phone and was never home it took nearly a week of calling back and forth to finally get in touch with him. It turned out he lived in Queens (I live in Manhattan) and was coming into the city on the weekend, so we arranged to meet downtown. I didn't really have to go downtown, but I was so determined to return his phone that even as I kept telling myself I didn't have to go this far, I ended up kind of going out of my way to meet up with him. He was grateful and offered me a big reward, but I refused knowing that sooner or later he might end up finding my lost phone one day. It felt good knowing that I did the right thing.

I have lost my phone before and been lucky one and 1/2 times. One time I got it back and one time the guy said he would send it but never did. The one that was found was lost on a road trip about 600-800 miles away and the other time I got really lucky and a sales girl found it and ran it out to me! But I have lost them in dumpsters and other odd places. Had a Nextel phone one time I lost and the 2 way switch got stuck and we heard it as the heavy machinery was running around it and then over it for about 2 hours. You lose a lot of cell phones doing demo work in constuction: they slip off your belt or out of your pockets. Glad I don't do a lot of heavy construction anymore: it was costly to buy a new cell phone every couple of weeks or months to replace one I lost. The company supplied the first one new but I had to buy the replacements and spend 1-2 hours at the Nextel shop getting a replacement- time that was better spent elsewere!

If you just bought the thing - did you pay for it with your credit card? If so, check to see if your credit card has a "30 day protection" policy. Not sure exactly what it is called but it is supposed to cover things that are lost or stolen if you buy them with your card.

I bought it locally via craigslist so CC protection is out.

That's what we call "clubing phone" since it's easy to hurt pple with those than the new small compact phones. :P
