No, not Microsoft. MySpace, the other big suckage. Does it always suck like this?

Finally, at the insistance of a few friends, I made myself a page about two months ago and have been maintaining it regularly. Rather uneventful, though I am highly annoyed by the amount of advertisements on the site.

Then completely out of nowhere, within the past day or so I've had 6 friend requests and 5 messages from random people who are without a doubt some kind of spammers.

I've heard all the widespread complaints about, and disrespect for, MySpace here at G|A and elsewhere. The sentiment about MS users seems to be simlar to those who still use AOL as an ISP. Now I guess I understand what it's all aboot, eh?

Similar experiences anyone? Is this typical?

There's ads on myspace?

just add this to you hosts file
I made this list a while back, still blocks 99% of the ads, but it also blocks embedded music on most pages.

We've had to block it at work because people were spending more time on it than working.

Zactly.

"Ooh! Here's a shiny gif to put on my page!"
"Ooh! An internet spam talking about how the girl from The Ring is going to kill me! Let's send it to everyone I know!"
"Ooh! Let's comment with another sparkly gif talking about how you're hot!"

Goth kids telling each other how cool they are. The nerds from high school (or still in high school) tricking out their pages and trying to 500+ friend adds. Trying to get adds from the fake celebrity Myspace pages.

Ugh. AOL at its worst wasn't that bad, but the sentiment is there.

On the other hand, without MS i wouldnt have been able to get in touch with some people i knew, and i wouldnt have met some cool people i know now.

:stupid:

Yeah, MySpace sucks for all the reasons already stated in this and other threads. But I'm with CP, it's enabled to get back in touch with some old high school friends. For that reason alone I'm cool with the site...

I see it like this.
1. I have my good friends, talk to them between daily and bi-weekly. Don't need myspace for them. but of course they are on there.
2. I have my semi-friends, we went to school/worked together. WE now live far away, and dont really have the closeness to call and talk frequently. They are on myspace and i can read about them, read their blogs, and send little notes saying, hey i saw other semi-friend and he says hi.
3. I connect with random person from forever ago, we talk for about a week trading stories and then they fade onto the friends list oblivion.

Some people live and die by myspace. It seiously is like high school. "OH no, i'm not on your top 8 friends, i hate you!! blah blah blah" sooo dumb to me. I even have the notices sent to a spam mail so it doesn't really come up. I just check it once a week after i've hit gotapex, digg, and all my more enjoyable web sites.
Mostly i enjoy reading my friends blogs and writing back to wish them well or say congrats, but its definitely not the 5 hour a day gossip fest that it is for some people.
Oh there is a good thing that says 10 reasons i dont do myspace.
http://jstoppi.googlepages.com/10reasonsididn%27tstartamyspaceaccount

one of my friends had myspace and deleted it cause she was stalked. another one had it and deleted it so her employer wouldn't make an opinion of him in advance cause he was a wild rock climbing, tree hugging, nature boy applying for a job designing suv's... So yeah it has its moments... Choose wisely. :)

Or be named Mark Garcia, so you can hide amongst the 1,000,000 other mark garcia's. ;)
