Hey folks! Just wanted to mention that I'll be in Montreal next week, Sunday through Wednesday (3/11-3/14). My brother and I are driving up for a few days for a short vacation/ road trip. We've heard it's a pretty neat town.
Anyone in the area? Lemme know, we'll get together! Anyone been there before and have suggestions for things to see and do? Please let me know!
TIA!

Did you get your passport? I heard they aren't letting anyone through the border without one anymore.

Today, passport is only required if you fly into Canada. Driving over won't require one until 2008:
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Yea we both have passports. Though I don't think they'll be needed, it wouldn't hurt to take them along anyway. Maybe they'll stamp it for me, mine's still a virgin. Thanks for the reminder!

We just walked around Quebec, ate, and looked around the city. Montreal was the same way, but I liked the feel of Quebec more, and the architecture was nicer.

Ah yes, I've been particularly intrigued by the Windsor Ballet. Very convenient to the Detroit suburbs!

Well here's the update on passports and such while crossing the Canadian border.
I had mine but my brother forgot his. We have both crossed the border several times before with nothing but a driver's license and it had never been a problem. And we had read that passports aren't required until Jan '08. So we thought it would be the same as before. Not quite.
Seems like they're starting to crack down a bit. Going in to Canada the dude at the booth asked us to pull in and register with the immigration office, apparently 'cause of lack of passport or birth certificate for my brother. So we did and were on our way about 10 minutes later.
Coming back in to US, again customs guy gave us a hard time about not having passport or birth certificate. Gave my brother a little pamphlet outlining the changes and what documentation is/ will be necessary, then we were on our way.
While passport still isn't necessarily... uh, necessary, it certainly would speed up the border crossing and keep the customs people happy. Apparently until the requirements officially change, a birth certificate will keep them happy in the meantime.
The End.
