I've never really been a fruit-eater. I've always avoided fruits unless I was forced to eat them by my parents when I visit home. Recently, in an attempt to start eating more healthily, I've been trying to eat an apple a day. Because I never really enjoyed apples, I wasn't sure what type is good so I bought one of each kind at the local supermarket for a taste test. Many were just average. Some I immediately hated, such as the golden delicious (too sour) and Fuji (too slushy). In the end, the Gaia was my favorite. Plenty sweet and crisp and crunchy.
What's your favorite type of apple and why?

I LOVE golden delicious. It sounds like you might've had one that was a tad bit green still. Look for one that's all yellow and is starting to turn dark gold/ red. Those are my all-time favorites, they should be crisp and sweet, light and juicy and refreshing. Mmmm!
My favorite apples (in order):
Golden Delicious
Ida Red
Empire
MacIntosh
I do enjoy just about every other kind of apple too, except for my least favorite: Red Delicious. They're always kind of funky tasting, not sweet at all, and very prone to turning soft and mushy. Bleh!!

My absolute fave is Granny Smith. I love the bite to it. I also like Gala, Fuji, and many others are good to eat. I can not eat Red Delicious ever, they are nasty. I thought I hated apples for the longest time cause that was all my mom bought.

:agree:
Granny Smith, hands down. They seem to keep a fairly long time as well.
An apple a day? Nice...now throw some in that oatmeal you're eating daily as well. :hihi:

:stupid:
I looooove apples right off the tree. I usually go picking a few times each fall depending on what varieties are ready. That's the time of year when I'll eat like 6 or 8 apples a day and make sauce and pies. My father recently got an apple press and he has maybe a dozen trees on his property, so we'll be looking forward to fresh homemade cider next fall.
This thread and the bread one are making me hungry! Why did I buy stupid bananas at the store last night instead of apples?!?

There is a big orchard here called Apple Hills..they have sooo many different kind of apples to pick that you can easily pick hundreds of pounds (which I usually do) and not even realize it-plus you can eat your fill while picking (I do that too!)..one other thing I can recommend too are Sweet Crab Apples-they are small-apple shaped, and taste like very sweet pears. I always pick about 20 lbs of those too. The sour crab apples are exactly that-SOUR! BUT-they are good for using in sauces.

One of the best things I realized about apples is that they stay good for a long time. I guess that's what makes it possible to go and pick hundreds of pounds of them at a time. Sweet.
Honey crisp, pink lady, sweet crab and granny smiths are the next ones I'm gonna try (if I can find them around here...).

Braeburns are fantastic, however I'm also a big fan of Granny Smiths, Spartans, Galas, and Pippins. Red Delicious are nasty as hell.

Macintosh's. I like their tartness, and their shape and coloration have a rustic, old world look about them. The red delicious's and some of the fancier apples look like they've been genetically engineered or at least are a product of years of cross breeding and species domestication. Macintoshes have a more rugged, out-in-the-wild look about them that makes it seem like the plant hasn't evolved genetically much over the thousands of years humans have been involved in agriculture.

Like a real grape or fake grape? It must be pretty strong in order to overcome the original flavor of the apple itself.
How Is A GrāppleŽ Made?
GrāppleŽ brand apples begin as a Washington Extra Fancy Fuji Apple. Of all apples this is the one that takes on the grape flavor best. This Patent Pending process is complex and the ingredient mix primarily includes concentrated grape flavor and pure water. All ingredients are USDA and FDA approved and the process has been licensed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.
There is nothing but flavor being infused into the Fuji apple. The apple takes on no additional sugars or calories. They are not genetically altered in any way.
The apple is as healthy as ever but now has the new exciting grape flavor.
Sounds like they have some process for infusing a regular old apple with grape flavoring. Weird. I'd be more comfortable eating a genetically modified one that made its own grape flavor.

It's odd, but good. I can't see how they are doing it (No needle marks, etc) The flavor is somewhat subtle, but they smell like grape soda. If you can find them at your local grocery give them a try. That's where I found them.
Pricey though: $4.99 for 4
