i just had to have 2 new mufflers put on my truck today . it seems like ever 2 years i have to have them replaced due to rusting out . its a 98 ford f-150 with the little v-8 auto 2 wheel drive . this dont seem normal to me . the pipes to the mufflers are solid and they just have to replace the mufflers .i did away with the tail pipes . (over the axle pipes long ago ) this is my 4th time now replacing the mufflers at a cost of $160 for the set and short pipes to push the fumes downward .

this seems like way to soon for stock type mufflers to keep rusting out to me .
any thoughts on this . normal wear or not normal wear ?

My '98 and my 2000 both went through mufflers like crazy (and I did Lightning style exit too) and it wasn't until my '03 that I did this: http://stainlesssteelmufflers.com/350mufflers.htm "smitty" style and this set has gone almost 60k miles, so yeah, they've done a lot better. Nice sound too. I personally went with the ggp250, but it's a matter of taste. Since I have stick I like the glasspack sound (NO 'glass in 'em) but you might dig the turbo sets. By the way, the wear comes from a heat problem that Ford never sorted out - too much heat coming off the cats going straight into the mufflers and it just eats 'em up.

Are stainless steel mufflers available for your truck?

Pretty much, most newer vehicles have stainless steel exhaust piping until you get to the muffler.

Aluminized mufflers aren't gonna last as long as Stainless Steel piping... but as JMK has mentioned, if you want to spend the cash, you can probably buy a stainless steel muffler that will give you way more life than your average common muffler.

Personally, I have a stainless steel AeroTurbine muffler that hasn't rusted out and has been through 3 Winters.

you live in michigan? how often do you wash your truck? the salt during the wintertime really corrodes that stuff. that's why you always see crazy long lines at carwashes after the snow....because people don't want their mufflers falling off (as well as their ride to look clean)
