Before DF says his normal stuff about using it online,

I didn't use it online. :D

Two charges.

Small.

One at Toys R Us for $10.xx in NY state
The other at Hertz Rent a Car for $20.xx in OKC

Bank said it could have been a local merchant. My card never leaves my sight. Not happy about this. :( And it was my card, not Donnie's that was used. She said that the number was keyed in, so a dup card wasn't made. I guess that is good news.

That stinks... hopefully those weren't primer purchases to verify it worked before they go for some big ones.

DF says... "NEVER use a debit card in public... not just 'online'".

I won't even use my debit card at the grocery store... only at the appropriate ATM machines, just because mistakes and ID theft can hurt you immediately if not caught quickly.

Remember the thread that I posted about my CC being compromised at the local T.J. Maxx store? That ID Theft wasn't "online"... but it still happened. These days... you just can't be "too careful" with your electronic money.

But hey, at least your bank caught it quickly so that it didn't get way outta control. :D

The bank didn't catch it.

I did :) The charges were still pending and the Hertz was just way out of the norm for us.

And I am to the point where I won't be using it in public anymore either. It will take some getting used to, but by golly I hate theifs too!

I need to order checks.

Oh.. my bad.

WHEW... now that was a "close call". Good thing you were on top of it. :D

Personally, it's a dayuum shame that we have to be so vigilant nowadays with our cards... however there is always someone out there trying to "get over" and they don't mind stepping on you to get there.

DF, I have to be on top of it. We are a family of 5 who survive on SSgt pay

We can live semi-comfortly, but we still have to be careful. Honestly, we have money for all the bills and $800 left for groceries and gas and whatevers each month. We did have a nest egg when I quit working, but Mike taking me to court over the kids 3 yrs ago wiped that out ($12,000 in lawyer bills will do that) Donnie retires in 2 1/2 years and Patrick will be ready to start K-garten. I will get back to work then :) it's just better on the budget for me to stay home right now then paying gas, daycare, clothing etc for me to work. I have skills, I kinda still use them. And I might start getting my certs after Donnie gets through Window certs himself (VA is paying for his :) )

BTW... did anyone see that Dateline special a few weeks back "To Catch and ID Thief"?

You should see what measures ID Thieves are using now to get your credit and debit cards to buy all kinds of stuff and have it shipped to Africa and other 3rd World Countries for resale.

I've personally gotten to the point where I went out and bought a 20 sheet, cross cut shredder to make dayuum sure that my info doesn't get too far out there.

Here's an interesting scam, I wonder how common this really is:
