I am upgrading my 4 year old Toshiba laptop (larger hard drive, memory and DVD burner).

In the event something goes wrong, I will be using an old IBM laptop (Windows 98SE) to hook to the Internet (slower DSL) while performing the upgrade.

This computer has no Ethernet connector, so I must purchase a card. I am trying to decide whether to purchase a PCMCIA card or a USB 1.0 card.

Suggestions?

Definitely go with the PCMCIA card -- USB Ethernet solutions tend to be very finicky at best from my experience a while back.

Get a 3Com PCMCIA card off of eBay - I bought one for my old Sony complete with dongle for eight bucks.
