$2.2 Billion Bonded Debt for AMD.
AMD Searching Ways Out of Crisis

AMD’s quarterly report gave to understand that the company was not doing as well as they wished. Trying to reduce the expenses AMD decided to have more processors made in third-party production facilities and sell more licenses for their intellectual property. However, besides that there were also purely financial means of resolving the crisis.

Advanced Micro Devices today announced the pricing of $2 billion aggregate principal amount of 6.00% Convertible Senior Notes due 2015 in a private placement to qualified institutional buyers. It will allow the company to gain additional financial means. AMD announced it will sell $1.8 billion worth of convertible notes, giving buyers a 30-day option to buy up to an additional $400 million in notes to cover any over-allotments. These actions will definitely put an end to rumors that large AMD stock options may be purchased by big investment agencies or other companies. Hopefully these measures will help AMD improve the situation.

AMD’s Future to Be Set by Q4 2007?
AMD's Quarterly Results Caused Concerns

AMD seems to be close to financial disaster. Pessimistic analysts as well as most other analysts who have been always sticking to the principle “hope for the worst if you don’t want to get disappointed”, have been very active towards AMD lately. And one of the primary reasons for that is the financial quarterly report for Q1 2007 that the company has recently made public.

The numbers presented in this report look far from acceptable for the company, I would say. And unfortunately, most analysts predict that it may get even worse than that.

According to EETimes, even the most pessimistic forecasts didn’t picture AMD’s current financial situation in such gloomy tones. Besides the aggravating economical situation, the company has lost a significant share of the market. According to iSuppli, Intel’s and AMD’s market shares in Q4 2006 equaled 75.7% and 15.7% respectively, but in Q1 2007 these numbers have changed to 80.2% and 11.1%. This is the first serious change like that over the last few years.

At this time everyone is looking forward to Q2-Q3 2007. This is when AMD is expected to announce new graphics (R600) and new processor (Barcelona) technologies that should (or shouldn’t) help the company make up for the lost market share.

In the meanwhile the same analysts believe that AMD’s current finances will last them only for the next few quarters. What happens next is really hard to tell. The company needed more than a year to shake Intel’s positions. Now they obviously don’t have that much time. Anyway, no matter what is going to happen, let’s wish AMD luck. It is obviously in our best interest :)

So what are they trying to do? Reducing pricing on processors to try to get back some market share- even at short term costs

New AMD Prices and Opteron News.

These processors have first appeared in AMD product catalogue three weeks ago, but only yesterday they were officially launched into the world. The semiconductor giant announced that they begin shipping Opteron 2222 SE and Opteron 8222 SE.

I would like to remind you that these are dual-core 90nm processors working at 3.0GHz frequency, featuring 2MB cache and 119.2W TDP. The chips are designed for Socket 1207 form-factor and support new Registered DDR2 memory. Unlike these two guys, the Opteron 1222 SE processor also mentioned in AMD’s price-list is designed for Socket AM2, supports regular DDR2 SDRAM and features 125W TDP.

The price for the new Opteron 1222 SE / 2222 SE / 8222 SE processors (in 1000-unit quantities) is claimed to be $655, $873 and $2149 respectively.

New server processors, however, were not the only topic of the recent AMD press release. The company has also shared the results of their tests indicating that quad-core Barcelona CPUs work about 50% faster in floating-point operations than the corresponding competitor’s solutions (Intel quad-core server processors).

And FINALLY coming out with their Direct X 10 capable video cards. NVidia came out with theirs ages ago and have taken a bigger share of the graphics card market from ATI/ AMD. NVidia did have some driver issues for their unified shader products, but they seem to be getting worked out.

Graphics Solutions with DirectX 10 Support from AMD Coming Out.
AMD to Launch 10 New Graphics Cards in Second Half of May

It was believed until recently that AMD will be launching R600, RV630 and RV610 based graphics cards either in early May or in the middle of the month. These forecasts were based on the information we received from AMD partners, so it was certainly less credible than the statements made by the company officials. At this time the preview of these solutions is being held in Tunisia for members of the worldwide press.

At the quarterly conference AMD representatives were speaking about their plans regarding the launch of these upcoming graphics solutions, the detailed transcripts from the briefing can be found here. Henry Richard shared some data about the upcoming R600 based graphics cards announcement. Now we are talking about the second half of May. AMD has already picked the place for their launch. In May they will reveal 10 solutions supporting DirectX 10. And when someone asked whether there will be enough graphics cards for beginning of shipments, Henry Richard answered that AMD had never been known for paper launches.

We dare suppose that most of the upcoming graphics solutions will be built around RV630 and RV610 chips, however, there will certainly be a few flagship products on the powerful R600 as well. Most online sources assume that its will take R600 model with 1GB of GDDR-4 some time before it actually hits the stores, and at first the users will have to be happy with Radeon HD 2900 XT featuring 512MB of GDDR-3 memory onboard. Well, let’s be patient and the truth will soon be known.

I hope it won't go down because we need competition in both video card and CPU markets even though I own some Intel stocks.
