Frankly, I still really like my MacBook. You can get Word/Excel 2004 for it, and plus you can run Windows in a VM or on the hardware if you like.

Sounds like you're not going to be heavily using it (i.e. no processor or graphic intensive tasks). Would you prefer a lighter, less powerful notebook or a heavier, more powerful one? In other words, are you going to be carrying it around a lot?

This one isn't too bad (I think) http://www.gotapex.com/got-deals/154230-hp-notebook-17-1gb-120gb-1-73-duo-lightscribe-geforce-7600-tv-tuner-800-ar-free-s-and-h.html

Pretty much any machine you get today will be pretty powerful as long as you get the Core2 Duo processor. The questions you need to as yourself are:

- Do you need powerful graphics on the machine?
- What size screen do you want?
- What's your budget?

If you have ideas about those questions, I'll recommend a machine or 2 for ya.

My recommendation would be the Inspiron 6400. Good workhorse machine, widescreen display, easily had for under $1k.

If you like, I have a 30% off coupon that expires today - it's all yours if you think you can pull the trigger today.
