Well it depends...

Are you talking about per car... or are you talkin' about how much altogether we pay per month for vehicles? :D

Between 2 vehicles, I pay about $820 a month... however on a good note, when they get paid off I'm not gonna re-up a new payment anytime soon unless something tragic happens. :D

I haven't had a car payment in years. I don't see a need to keep up with the Jones (or anyone else).

I bought a new car in '05. My justification was that I've driven old junkie cars my whole life and had so many problems (sometimes even life-threatening) that I was sick of it. Now that I own a new car w/ a higher monthly pmt, I never want to buy new again. I also do not want to borrow money for a car ever again, unless I get the financing terms I got when I bought mine (1.9% interest). I have an '05 accord ex and pay $300 a month. I think I paid 9K. The term is 60 months.

I pay cash for used cars at Federal Government fleet sales. I would never consider a new car, unless I won the lottery or inherited big bucks from a relative (never gonna happen).

I can definitely afford a new vehicle, but it becomes used the day you drive it off the lot.

Big waste of money!

I think on my Civic I paid 6000 down with 3.9% for 4 years and my payments were 280/month back in 1999.

Mine was a CPO with 8k miles on it. So I let the dealer eat the initial depreciation for me. :)

Nothing here. I bought my Cherokee outright, used, in '03. Averaging things out over the past 3 1/2 years, it has cost me about $100 per month. I've put ~75k hard miles on it (I drive very agressively).

I might be willing to finance a newer used vehicle next time I'm looking to buy something. But I can't justify spending money on a new vehicle every stinkin' month just to pay for depreciation. Maybe far into the future, but not anytime soon. Right now I'm better off putting everything I can spare towards paying off student loans.

not always.. I bought my Honda Civic in 2001 from a dealer in Oklahoma brand new, brought it out to california, was pricing around just for grins 2 years later, and it was worth more then I paid for it in Oklahoma.. lol.

i WAS gonna get into financing, but when i got this 93 dodge dakota with only an unbelievable 71k miles on it, i changed my mind. the pickup truck runs smooth, so even if the odometer may have rolled over twice already, i dont care. for $850 cash, im happy.

ive learned a few things about buying cars:
1) new isnt always the best.
2) monthly payments are a waste on something that rapidly depreciates.
3) used cars are cheap - just have to know whats crap and whats a good deal.
4) conversely from #2, having NO payments frees up my budget for maintenance.

if i WAS gonna finance, $250/mo is my max. and no, i prefer NOT to get anything new. unless its a really REALLY low price.

Everybody is so against financing their automobiles. I think financing is completely beneficial as long as your interest rates are low. My interest rate was 1.9%, I'm glad I financed my car. I could put the rest in a higher-yield savings account or elsewhere that has a higher yield premium.

Typically, I agree with you... however I have also learned to appreciate knowing the "full history" of a vehicle via a "brand new sale".

As a caveat to what you said above...

1) New can be the best... if you REALLY buy the car you REALLY want and don't just "settle" for whatever the dealer has on the lot at the time you need a car. Buy the car you love... not the car that is "just there" and hold on to her for as long as you can.

2) Monthly payments are just the cost of doing business. However, even a new car becomes a "paid for" car in a few years. Do you REALLY need to buy a "new" New car every 3 to 4 years? If so.. then please read Statement 1 above.

3) Used cars are a crap shoot... sometimes you get a peach and other times you get a lemon. Even carfax doesn't know EVERYTHING about a used car. Getting stuck with someone else's hidden problems really sucks... and you definitely don't get the same kind of love that an original owner gets from the Manufactuer when it comes to getting that stuff fixed.

4) I always agree that no car payment is best... so try to be happy with the one you got not the one on the lot. :D

I am also one of those people that hasn;t had a car payment in years. When I finally get rid of the Saturn POS I'm stuck with right now, I'll get a new car. Unless I get a good rate, I'll probably pay cash.

I don't have a payment either. Truck, antique car, motorcycle.

I've been making a monthly "car payment" to the '08/'09 Challenger down payment fund though so that's 350/mo. I'll probably get that once the shock of a big house payment wears off.

What kind of cars do you end up with and what condition are they in? I have seen cars in the govt fleet and they aren't vehicles I would want. Just asking b/c maybe I am missing something.

Last two cars- '99 Plymouth Breeze w/ 2.4 4 cylinder. Bought the first for $4600 drove it for a year sold it for $4500. Present one I paid $3500, owned it for 4 years. About $600 in repairs. I may sell it next year for $3000. Both in great condition.

I went to the last auction 3 weeks ago. They were selling '04 Dodge Stratus E85 6 cylinders for about $6000. '04 and '05 Aleros for about $7300, extended warranty for $50.
