just a random question.

Have an 03 chevy malibu and the fuel pump went out.
what can i expect to pay for repairs parts and labor??
if anyone can give me aballpark that would be fantastic.

The pump runs about $500 (+/-) plus about 2 1/2 hours labor according to my sources.

That's for an OE pump. Aftermarket pumps might be a little cheaper, but also might not last as long.

You can get an AC Delco Fuel Pump for your car for $241.79 or if yours is one with strainer it will cost $312.79. Rockauto is good online place to get OEM parts. I have been using them for years. I just did my fuel pump in my 2000 Chevy C3500 I paid $270 for an OEM pump whereas the dealer wanted $489 for just the part. It took me less than one hour to change out the pump (in tank).

Yeah, forgot about Rock Auto. I based my quote on full list price for the part figuring THS would probably take it to a shop.

Be sure you carefully inspect the wiring connector that plugs into the fuel pump unit on top of the tank. If it looks burned replace it (or you'll be buying another pump in short order).

I have found on some pickups that it is easier to unbolt the bed and jack one end of it up than it is to drop the tank. I can't remember if the Malibu has an access hatch in the trunk floor or not. Probably not.

shop just called sd $635 for parts and labor i guess the sending <accending> unit is bad as well
none of this means anything to me
just a bunch of money and a pain in the ass

yep mechmike that is how I did it. picked up the bed instead of dropping the tank. It was almost full ~34 gallons.

The sending unit used to feed the fuel gauge back in the day. Now it is an important input to the engine control computer. The Feds now require the engine control computer to perform active (and sometimes even intrusive) tests on the vehicle's emissions systems. This includes evaporative emissions from the fuel tank and vent system, and one of the inputs for evaporative emissions tests is fuel level.

That's the 50,000-foot view. I'll spare you the boring details.

It is not an expensive part, but it is hard to get to since it is mounted on the fuel pump assembly. If I were working on the vehicle I would recommend replacement as a matter of course since we would already be dropping the tank and taking the pump out.

In an 'o3? Can you complain to the manufacturer? Innerauto is also a great source for parts for us DIYrs.
