In another move to recapture the top position on the market of personal computers (PCs), Dell Inc. started to sell systems with pre-installed Linux operating system. The move not only emphasizes growing popularity of Linux, but also Dell’s intention to appeal even to minor groups of computer users to regain the No. 1 spot from HP.

Dell will initially sell three systems with pre-installed Ubuntu 7.04 operating system: XPS 410, Dimension E520n desktops and the Inspiron E1505n notebook. The systems feature dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Pentium Dual-Core processors that can be configured according to end-users’ needs. The laptop will cost starting from $599, whereas desktops’ prices will start at $599 and $849.

The new systems target the Linux enthusiast community and are a direct result of extensive customer feedback received since February via the company’s Web site for fielding customers’ suggestions to improve products, services and operations. About 30 000 community members advocated that Dell offer systems with Linux pre-installed, and more than 100 000 participated in a follow-up survey to help determine customer preferences, including which Linux distribution to offer initially.

“The interest and enthusiasm from customers who challenged us to deliver a consumer Linux solution have been matched within Dell and Canonical, the sponsor of Ubuntu, by a team of dedicated professionals who made this happen in a phenomenally short period of time,” said Neil Hand, vice president, Dell consumer product group. “It’s fantastic to be able to offer what many Linux enthusiasts want, great Dell products with popular open-source software for work and play.”

In a bid to recapture the lead on the market of personal computers (PCs), Dell Inc., one of the world’s largest maker of computers, plans to start selling its products through biggest retail chains, something, which reflects changes happening to the manufacturer of computers, who currently sells PCs only directly to customers in the
U.S.

Wal-Mart plans to sell two Dimension multimedia desktop computer models that are currently available directly from Dell in bundles for under $700, Reuters news-agency reports. Configuration of the systems is yet unclear, what is known is that they will be sold through Wal Mart and Sam’s Club stores.

“While we can’t get into specifics, in the coming quarters there will be additional activity in support of this move into global retail,” Dell spokesman Bob Pearson is reported to have said. “Today’s announcement with Wal-Mart represents our first step. Stay tuned”.

At present Dell only sells computers directly to end-users through the Internet in the United States. However, in some other countries the company runs its own stores too and sells systems though big malls. For years Dell has been saying that selling computers using online stores cuts down their costs and allows the firm to sell its products at a lower price than the rivals. Nevertheless, HP managed to become the world’s top PC maker recently, not only because of success in the USA, but also because success in European countries and selling computers through large retailers.

Dell plans to add additional retailers in its top 10 to 15 markets. Those countries include the UK, Germany, France, Japan, China, Brazil and Japan.

How much does Dell pay for XP and Vista licenses compared to Linux?

I will bet that a lot of customers would like to have a Windows OS AND Linux on their computer.

Would you buy a Dell through WalMart? What kind of service would you get? "uh yeah, we have some computer stuff over there by the DVD players. I think you turn them on with that button thingy. What kind of RAM does it have? Huh? It's not some kind of sheep."
