Heh... My Daddy had a 72 Ford F-100.

He also was a big barbeque/smoker chef. He even built his own smoker made from an old football locker that was attached to the back of a boat trailer.

Gotta love the ingenuity of "Down South" engineering. :thumb: :D

Nope... not at all.

Think about it... it used to take my Dad 2 days to prep and cook the meat at his famous barbeques.

He'd spend one day preparing the meat and sauce... and then spent nearly another day actually slow cooking it over a wood fire.

His ribs were soooooooooo tender they would fall off the bone and melt in your mouth!!!!! :lick:

Man... I sure wish my Dad was still here. Memorial Day just passed and the 4th of July is not too far off. Smoked Ribs, Chicken, Sausages, Deer Meat, Goat Meat, and a host of other goodies straight from the pit. Mmmmmmm Mmmmmmmm!!!! Truly Heaven on Earth. :D

The things people will do to find that flavor that makes their BBQ stand out from all the rest. :heh:

Heh...

Well honestly, the meat didn't taste like an old football locker. :D

But hey... most good barbeque pits are made from 55 gallon oil drums... so hey, I guess it could be worse. :D

That's the worst part... I DO know, and we just can't get food like that up here in the frigid north. Someone tries from time to time, but no one's gotten it right yet.

So if someone down in Memphis could just fedex me some pulled pork, a couple of slabs of ribs and a bottle of sauce, I'd be much obliged!

Alabama's finest - you can order online:

If you MUST have Memphis, this is the best. Remember that Memphis is a FedEx hub:

Carolina (sweet mustard sauce) more to your liking? Maurice has you covered:

i usually try and get to a bbq place when i'm in the carolinas. but it's still never as good at one of those joints as finding a dude like DF's dad that takes pride in his work and doesn't rush the process.

and is it me or is it a sign of good bbq in the south if there are a lot of black folks in the place? if i go somewhere and it's just white people, i'm like...uh-oh. this isn't going to be the "real" bbq i'm looking for.

My Dad, and the guy that started Dreamland BBQ (ironically his name was "Big Daddy") were pretty good friends....

(here is a photo of the front of the original store...)

My brother went to school at Stillman College on a baseball scholarship back in 1980 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where the first Dreamland BBQ stand was established. We used to go there to eat after his baseball games.

Dreamland BBQ is good... however since they use a Mustard based sauce, I don't like them as much as I liked my Dad's BBQ (he used a hickory/molasses based sauce.)

Last time I was in Atlanta, I stopped by and got some of the Dreamland BBQ (they have a franchise there now), it was "OK", but it sure wasn't as good as the BBQ you got back at the original store in Tuscaloosa! :lick:

Heh... fond memories. Back in those days, if you bought a slab of ribs, he'd give you a whole loaf of Sunbeam white bread to go with it. GOOD TIMES I tell ya! :lick: :D

That is so cool!

Yeah, the menu at the original Dreamland used to be slabs of ribs, white bread, and bottled Cokes - period...

Back when I worked for Saturn (at the HQ in MI, not at the plant), my first trip to Spring Hill I ate at Corky's every single day I was there.

One of these days I'll have to try the mail order stuff, but I'm convinced it won't be as good as eating there.

Corky's is the best part of the Memphis airport. There's always a line of people waiting.
Spring Hill's going to be a "mainstream" GM plant now.

Yeah, I heard it's shut down for retooling now. Glad to see they're not closing it.

Gentlemen, I give you..... the Car-BBQ!
http://www.raymondkwan.com/uploader2/files/982/P1271194a.JPG

Nothing says Kah-LEE-fornia like a limo customized with a full BBQ, 2 refrigerated beer keg taps (behind the driver's area) and meat smoking trays in the trunk. Oh, and this thing still runs too!

I saw it at the Turlock Annual Automotive Swap Meet last January. They were asking $3k.
