I've the need for more RAM: I'm at 512 and am suffering. I currently use PC3200 (on a 3 ghz machine.)

I want to toss 2 gig in, but memory at my speed is still pretty expensive. (Newegg has CAS 2 memory for 169.)

I'm noticing faster speeds are well under $100 for 2 gig. Can I buy a faster speed and stick on my slower bus?
I heard somewhere that the latency improves too, when faster memory is stuck in a slower system: is that true?

Make sure the "faster" memory you are seeing isn't DDR2 (oftentimes labeled as "PC2 6400" for instance).

DDR memory is quite expensive now since it's becoming obsolete, so paying $169 for 2GB of PC3200 CAS2 memory doesn't seem too surprising.

If you DO happen to find something faster than PC3200 DDR (184-pin), then yes it would function in your system at the reduced speed -- though you probably won't see any CAS latency lower than 2.

Pretty much the price of DDR isn't gonna come down much.

I remember paying $250+ for a pair of 1 GB sticks of PC3200 DDR, so honestly, $169 is not really all that much considering.
