Growing up, my dad had a garden and had slug problems. I have 3 suggestions.

1) Leave a tuna can full of beer in the dirt. Slugs are attracted to the smell of the beer, fall in, and drown.

2) Kids. My dad used to pay me a penny for each slug I found and chopped in half with a spade. He also paid me a penny for each worm I found. Man that was fun.

3) Electrocute them. We had raised beds in the garden. He ran two wires around the bed about 1/2 inch apart and connected them to a 9v battery. Slug slithers over the first wire, and then touches the second one. They don't like that very much. Make sure this is on a vertical wall, so the zapped slugs fall off. If it is on a flat area, the slugs will die, but keep making contact which drains the battery. We had a lot of fun beta testing this device.

I can personally attest to this method as a way to get rid of slugs. It is a damn shame to have to give them beer, but I found that pisswater beers like budweiser and coors did a good job attracting and killing slugs.

the only problem with using salt is that once it rains-the salt gets into the soil and burns your plants..the beer method DOES work. And they seem to like the cheap beer the best. Slugs gross me out-ugh..around here they are big, fat and about 1/2 lb each..I find them crawling up on my back porch stairs at night. Those I do salt.

Sounds like what my grandfather used to do to the squirrels that tried to raid his birdfeeder. 'Cept he used 120V AC for that. :dead:

Would you elaborate? I am curious how he set this thing up. aND WOULDN'T THIS TRIP A BREAKER EACH TIME IT ELECTROCUTED THE SQUIRREL?

Sorry about the caps..I'm too lazy to retype it.

not to go too far off topic here, but i thought it was funny that the time and effort it took johnnymk to apologize for the caps and explain he was too lazy to retype it could have just as easily been spent retyping the sentence he accidentally caps-locked. :P

And wouldn't this trip a breaker each time it electrocuted the squirrel?

Sorry about the caps..I'm too lazy to retype it.
It's easy to correct caps if you use the right editor. ;)

As for the breaker, I've gotten "bit" a few times while working on live circuits, and the breaker never trips. I think a body has enough resistance that a brief "electrocution" won't trip a circuit breaker. However, a GFCI should definitely trip (and would defeat the purpose of the squirrel fry).

I seriously considered setting up some 120v wires for a squirrel that had started living in my eaves through a hole in the fascia. My thoughts were to put wires on either side of the hole.

[edit] By the way, I use a registry mod in XP that disables the caps lock key:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,2a,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00

Beer works best, and i guess is the most humane as most get drunk and fall in. I would use something deeper then a tuna can though.

I spotted one slug dip his head in on and off for a good 20 min, he was too big to fall into a beer can with a good 1-2" drop to get the beer.

Man did his head and antenna spin when he would pull out...I let that one live.

Just great - unleashing beer-crazed drunken slugs for the rest of the world to deal with. Big thanks. ;)

Hmm, I dunno. I never witnessed it first-hand. He used to do that at their old camp where there were undoubtedly fuses instead of breakers. If that was an issue, he was the type who most likely just replaced the offending fuse with a screwdriver or a bolt or somthing.

But like Markel said, I've been zapped a few times and it hasn't tripped a breaker.

Yea, as cool as that slug might've been, you gotta figure it probably slithered away and found some other drunken slug to make sweet slimey love with, and you probably ended up with a whole generation of retarded beer-chugging slugs in your yard.

Ah, here ye go... if you got alcoholic slugs maybe you can entice them with a nice salt-rimmed margaritta. Or you could do tequila shots with 'em... w/ salt and lemon. On second thought they might not like that though, seeing as the tequila worm is probably a distant cousin. But hey, I won't tell 'em if you don't.
