theres no way this could be good. without competition all prices will go up. Take AMD and Intel for example.

I guess this shouldn't be a surprise. Nvidia makes awesome products but it is sad to see 3Dfx go. I just hope that one less competitor will not harm the quality of products in any way.
bad bad bad bad bad
Just like creative labs bought aureal
now no aureal 3500

I think nVidia will be implementing many of 3Dfx's proprietary software techniques, combining those with their current technologies to produce and even more superior product. nVidia was technologically so much further along than 3Dfx as far as hardware goes it's quite funny. If anyone has any arguments against that, just look at the GeForce 2 GTS 64 MB DDR card vs 3Dfx's highest card, VooDoo 5 6000 or whatever it was. 3Dfx had to construct a board with 4 processors and 4 fans to compete with nVidia's single GPU. Also, the board needs its own power supply. Yeah, that's effeciency for ya. As long as nVidia keeps reducing their die architecture more and more (likened to Intel reducing theirs to 0.03 micron, which is only a few atoms thick), they will not need to worry about implementing an external power supply, as the voltage can be reduced more and more with dropping transistor size. I can't wait to see GPUs based on organic architectures... mmmmm... molecular transistors... :D

well i think this is a good thing, seeing as nVidia is better than 3Dfx, hopefully prices won't go up, but whatever...
i don't think prices will go up...
they will definately go down...

Now that the rumors of Nvidia buying 3dfx to settle the lawsuit are all but history...this comes as quite a surprise.. NOT !
Geez, didn't we see this one coming a mile away or is it just the fact that Creative " gaining all we knew as Aureal "was the only hardware company that loves the taste of eating its competition ?
Come-fn'on it's a sign of the times and we are the only losers :(

Competition isn't the only thing that drives prices downward. Besides, there will still be some competition in ATI and Matrox, although to a much lesser degree. Another factor that determines the price of a product is its time present in the market. Sure, you may see some cards come out priced at $500 retail in the first few months, and there will always be those must-have hardware buffs that will pay the premium. For the rest of us that cannot afford such luxuries at first, a waiting period of only six months will yield the next generation of the card, forcing prices of the previous model downward. It happens all the time; one just has to be patient.

What about Intel and AMD? Oh yeah, once they got rid of Cyrix, AMD's market share increased and Intel had to drop their prices to remain competitive. The prices of both of them have been dropping steadily ever since, and the rate at which faster processors are released has increased dramatically.
Wait a minute, what was your point again?

One might argue that AMD would've done just as well even if Cyrix was still around. Cyrix produced (mainly) cheaper stuff, and the Durons aren't exactly flying off the shelves. :P

...cn ATI write drivers worth a crap in time to be suitable competition rather than the roadkill they usually simulate

thats what's going to kill ATI, not Nvidia. Great hardware, Piece of sh*t drivers.
Isn't that the same problem with Matrox too? (I own a Matrox. :heh: )
Let's hope that now nvidia can put more pressure on ATI and Matrox and get them to shape up a little.

I recall back when I was researching my last video card purchase (which resulted in the purchase of the 3D Prophet DDR-DVI) that I was pondering waiting for Matrox to release their next generation of cards (I think it was going to be the G600 and G800 series). I'm glad that I didn't wait, because Matrox just recently released the G450, which is just a souped-up version of the G400. Although this card is very desirable, I'll stick with my 3D Prophet.

Well, I'm still happy with my little TNT2. It can still run most games today. I don't think that I will ever buy a top of the line video card; much too expensive for me. I'll just wait a year and buy the previous year's model.
