The next big thing, though I've been hearing about them for a little while. They are silent, use much less electricity, produce much less heat, and perform very very well compared to any hard drive. Perfect for notebooks, etc. The final piece in my quest for a silent rig.

Only problem is that they are really expensive and it will take a while for prices to come down.

The other drive, that I'm interested in, is that samsung hybrid drive that is supposed to use ram for quick access and their silent hd for storage. It should be a nice option for price, performance, and silence if it ever makes it here. Though, Hybrid drives might never make it to market if prices come down enough on those ram drives.

Anyone get to play with one yet?

Until they get into the 100s of GBs and use a standard desktop interface (i.e. IDE, SATA, USB, etc...) then I don't see these going very far.

We've used these kinds of drives for years in the Gubment (only because our contracts stated that a PCMCIA slot was mandatory on all computers... desktops and laptops) however it will be harder for mainstream consumer PCs to use this technology unless they make a few changes to it.

Yes, it's defintely an interesting format, but so far it won't gain much acceptance until it standardizes and grows a little bit more.

The interface selection will expand with demand and 32 gigs+ should be fine for a boot drive with key programs and a game or 2. Not much different from using a small raptor for OS and a large hd for storage.

Did you guys have any problems with those SS drives? What size drives did you use and how was the speed on them?

10 or 20 GB is more than adequate for most users, with a larger USB or Firewire drive for other things.

While the seek time is good the transfer rate tends to be too slow ~20MB/s

We didn't have any problems with them, however they were used for storage of vital information in a "backup" facility.

At the time, the largest drives were only 540MB... but now you have 32 GBs.

As far as speed goes.... well we weren't all that concerned about that. The security of the data was more important.

great for HTPCs for its silence. also great for use as an OS drive.

I'd personally use it for the OS. For media, I'd use a quiet samsung spinpoint or wd ks drive. Both are known for being very quiet. The WD ks series performs on par with the seagate, but much less noise from what I've read.
