I had a friend who did this years ago and came by the house wanting to sell me some. I have to say they were pretty darn good and the price/selection was really nice.
I'm not sure I'd buy from just any salesman knocking on the door, but only did because I knew the guy and I'd beat his ass if it tasted like crap. ;)

One of our friends does it - he fills his entire freezer every year. Good price, and the meat is really good quality too. They used a referral though, so I'm not sure I'd trust just a random truck.

Did it once in San Diego, found out later that they were stolen from a restaurant, however they were really good steaks. Refrain from that type of sale now.

The guy I knew who did it basically had 6 or 7 different cuts and everything was vacuum sealed in it's own little pouch and packaged into a smallish box that in turn all fit into a much larger box to contain all the meats. I want to say it was around $120 back then for all the stuff and it really was a lot of meat. I was a single guy and it lasted me for a looong time.

There is a small company here that you can go buy from and occasionally (I think 3 times in the 4 years we've been here?) they will come by with their little truck with a refrigerated back end and try selling us some. We have never, cause we don't have the money at the time normally. But we WOULD. Just never have.

Honestly, the guys that sold me some meat like this in the past were ripoff artists...
The steaks were friggin' "paper thin" and fell apart when I tried to cook them, and some of the other cuts just didn't conform to the standards I look for when I buy meat directly from the grocery store.
The kicker for me was... he sold me a box of "chicken tenders" and charged me MORE than I could buy and equivalent box from Sam's Club (as I later found out... dayuum 20/20 hindsight  )
Either way... I just do go for the "meat truck" delivery anymore.
BTW... why is is that they always have a household freezer on the back of a beat up pickup truck? That just really doesn't make it look "legit" at all. :2far:

Hell no I wouldn't buy meat off the back of a truck. Is it government approved? Is it someone's mother in law? How old is the stuff? Has it been filled with chemicals to make it look fresh after sitting around for months? ..no thanks.
Every year, my brothers have two cows and two pigs butchered and we all split the cost and the meat...it's cheaper per pound to do it that way and we know where it comes from and that it's fresh. I do however pick up some nice roasts, chicken and turkeys when on sale at the Price Chopper or Wegmans..you can NEVER have enough meat in the freezer. If I know that I'm not going to use alot of what is from the butchers-then I pass it along to my sisters or sister in laws..it's a share-all kind of deal. It's the one thing that no one ever argues about!

The way it should be.

If the sausage guy at the farmers' market counts, then I have. He has a legit business and it is very good stuff. I dunno about some guy in a beat-up pickup selling meat on the street though... it'd depend on what kind of impression I got from the whole operation. Was the guy and his truck and the cooler/fridge clean, did the meat look fresh and was it well-cut, was it labelled as having come from a legit source (farm or business) that he was a representative of, etc?

In most cases... the guy in the street is gonna have the meat already vacuum sealed and frozen solid, so you really can't tell the "freshness" of it... you can only see the color which of course is usually red like fresh meat (but that don't mean it's fresh by any means...)

I had a buddy that did this. The guy came to his door and claimed that he had just made a large delivery of gourmet steaks to a local restaurant, and found that he had been given an "extra" case by mistake. He offered it to my friend at some hugely discounted (but still relatively expensive) price. My friend fell for it.
He told us about it the next day, and we asked all the same questions that are being asked above. How do you know it is fresh? Where did it really come from? The packaging apparently had no markings, so he had nothing to go on except the words of a random guy who showed up at his door.
He ended up throwing the meat away, after we put so much doubt in his head.

if it was really a extra case of meat . these guys would take it home or sell it to a diffrent account .he not be selling it door to door .it be to risky for him to loose his job. also you think he be able to call a friend to sell it to.
when i was in my late teens early 20's . i went to Los Angeles CA. and worked with a uncle selling tools out of the back of his truck .
we go to small shops and tell them these were unclaimed .and the trucking company sent us out to sell them . i was shocked how gulable or greedy people were .they just eat the story (lies') up. we stop in at the wholesaler in the am .reload up the truck every 2 days or less . spend a 1/2 hour taking the jap tags off the air tools . and be on are way to a new area . we made a killing doing this . they were some name brand tools but the cheaper imported made .not the first quality they think they were getting. we never said they were imported and the guys (buyers) never asked . they wanted them becouse of price
(greed) we sold anything from hacksaw blades to 12 speed floor drill press and every kind of tool in between . we even rent a motal or hotel suit on a weekend and run a tool sale ad in the local paper . at the time this was the late 70s-early 80's the imported tool market was not to well know of .today this con would not work .sure there are companys today selling the same type tools. but the general public is aware for the most part its a lower quality to the retail store name brand goods . yes there was a product warranty on the goods .but getting it covered . the companys were in china .or cost you more to ship then they were worth .and most have you add $$$$ with the product to cover shipping. also the tools were not repairable if they went bad .the units were to cheaply made in the first place .
