There are rarely things, in this day and age, that live up to their hype. Whether that's due to a bigger, better hype machine, or just crappier products, it just doesn't happen anymore.
Which is therefore why I was absolutely flattened by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Simply the best movie I can remember seeing. Not only was it action on the order of Jackie Chan's Drunken Master II, but the heroine was straight-up hawt, and the ending was tear-rendingly beautiful. Oh yeah, it was pretty funny too.
While this won't really help you folks that live in the sticks, I urge, COMPEL you Apexers that live in LA or NY to get to this movie as fast as your little feet will take you. A huge thumbs up.

Yes, it is. Is that a problem?
Ma Vie en Rose, The Postman, Life is Beautiful (?), weren't they all subtitled?
Plus, this one's got kung-fu! You can't beat that with a stick...

With the aforementioned hype, I went in with a reasonable amount of trepidation. Totally unfounded. The fight scenes were terrific, and some of the locations were eye-popping. Generally speaking, though, the stuff going on on the screen just looked great. You have to check out the flying scenes in the forest and the opening fight sequence. Very memorable. Definitely a buy when it comes out on DVD.

A problem? Of course not. Heck, it's my first language. I was just trying to confirm this "rumour" I heard. I grew up watching these sort of movies. :)
Didn't watch the first two other movies, and I thought Life is Beautiful was a complete waste of my five bucks... :D

yes, definitely watch it. Why even argue people? Any non-hollywood movie with Chow Yun Fat should just be shut-up-and-watched. Anyway, how often do you see a guy with both the words "Chow" and "Fat" in their name??

It was always spelt "Fatt" as opposed to "Fat" back when I was younger. :P

Is this in the theatres now? I saw a preview for it on a video I rented and I wanted to see it, but I don't remember if it was coming soon to video or coming soon to a theatre near you.

I think it goes into general release this Friday. I saw a commercial, and it was saying something about "starting this Friday", but I know it started two fridays ago in NY, and started last friday in LA (how I saw it).
Let me reiterate, the young girl is hawt, and will make you feel like a dirty old man (I'm all of 22, and I felt like a freaking pedophile, but I'm sure [hope] she's over 20).

If yer talking about the girl I think you're talking about, she was also in a recent Bond movie . . . the one where the guy wants to control the media I believe . . . she's the woman Bond works with. So you don't have to worry about THAT making you a dirty old man penny . . . but we know you still ARE one anyway . . . hehe

You're a blithering idiot. No, not Michelle Yeoh. She's almost 40. Why would I feel like a dirty old man for that?
Then again...
for....the little girls.....

I think you are referring to Ziyi Zhang:

Where did you get that? Import? And how is the transfer quality? I was looking to get it when it came out.

Overall I really enjoyed the movie... but they were 2 things that really really irked me about the movie...
1) Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat's mandarin is horrendous..as compared to Ms. Zhang, kinda ruined the dialog for me.
2) Chow Fun Fat looks like a damn block of wood, I think he should stick to guns and grenades. The fight scene with him and Zhang was well choreographed but Chow was just too stiff.... and he was suppose to be some great swordsman.. I would never had believed it in a million years...
here's an article about the movie, it actually says that Jet Li was approached for the role but he turned it down to do Romeo Must Die....

it's a pretty cool website... giving you the low down on movie soon to be released..as far as 2 years down the road...
well.. just my 2 cents about the movie... but yes, I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD and just keep repeating the first fight scene.... over and over...

Chow's from HK, no? Natives there speak mandarin with a rather funny accent... :)

As I read in a review I read before seeing the movie, both Fat and Yeoh took time to learn as much Mandarin as they could. Given that they're both from HK, I guess they probably did the best they could.
I'll give you one thing, though. That first fight scene was absolutely eye-popping.
And one mo' 'gain: APEX, WHERE'D YOU GET THAT DVD? I just assume it's foreign region, and thus I couldn't watch it anyway, but it'd be neat to know anyway.

When (in the US) will it be released anyways? I've heard that its already playing in LA and NY, but I'm nowhere near those two cities. :(

Here in Northern Cali it's open today 12/22. I'm pretty sure it's the same for the rest of the US. I know for one thing it's not gonna be open in a lot of theatres. Look for it in the small theatres that play indies.
p.s.....APEX! c'mon! We're waiting.

I read in Time that Ang Lee was so adamant about their accents that Michelle Yeoh would be on the verge of crying. Not that'd I would know, but I've noticed that my Chinese friends used to be very regional and picky. They used to dog on each other pretty bad.
Apex you are evil. Diabolique. But then I'm pretty sure I could get someone to pick that up for me from Korea, just like Apex had some one pick it up from "somewhere" ;)
Yeah, it was from HongKong. Kinda unfortunate, but computer dvd players are almost always region free. Works well with powerdvd 3.0. Windvd 2.0 v2.3 doesn't like it as much though.
BTW, lay off people! I'm on vacation, out in New Jersey! ;)
Can't believe I lugged my home networking system and laptop out here. When the wife finds out, I will be severely beaten about the head and shoulders with blunt instruments.

Eh?
"BTW, lay off people! I'm on vacation, out in New Jersey! "
Does not compute! Does not compute!
What doesn't compute? Visiting New Jersey and claiming that that's vacation, or my exclaimation for people not to expect me to be online 20+ hours a day and answering forum questions when I'm on vacation? ;)

No, just "vacationing" in New Jersey. Cold and dreary? You shoulda just hopped back on the cruise ship! :)
