Is it just me or does it seem like all the FREE services are vanishing? For example Lycos free internet is out, freelane.com is out too. Not to mention netzero seems like it's going out soon too. Also the "FREE" domain name register websites are no longer free...Domainzero.com you have to buy their BS plans in order to get the name for zero dollar?? Wat??? namezero.com too. If anyone still know a good "FREE" service please let us know...

that's kmart's free internet service which has an ad bar but is a lot less annoying than netzero's pop ups. They also say that they will always provide some source of free internet access even if this particular vendor they are using dies. That's reassuring. Hopefully I won't have to go hunting for another free internt service anytime soon!

Spinway also went under, I only use free services when my dsl goes down. The connection speeds are terrible, when and if you can get on, the banners are annoying, but if you can't stand to be away from the internet they are better then nothing.

I'm currently using the one American Express provides. Though the speed isn't great but acceptable, the banner is really small. You need to be AX card holder in order to use this free service.

I think what I will remember most about the years 1999 and 2000 was that it was the era of free stuff on the 'net. Free Internet access, free music and videos (i.e. Napster, Scour, etc.), free money (companies like Echo and the sites that pay for viewing advertising banners), and sites like Got Apex started popping up.

However, it seems much of this won't last longer. It seems that the idea of offering free stuff to view advertising banners does not result in a profit for the company. Plus, most companies that rely exclusively on Internet-based retailing, are deeply in debt and many of them are going to go out of business soon. It's just the result of a flawed business plan.

I've got Bluelight and just got a notice that they were bought out, but will remain free, although I doubt they'll be around for more than a year (if that long). The good news is that the prices for Internet access are dropping. I just saw where AT&T is offering ISP service for $4.95 a month, which is considerably cheaper than AOL, which still charges $21 a month for Internet service!

Here's a site that has a listing of free ISPs in every state...and it is divided into different cities, so you can find the ones that are a local call for you.
