So I have been exercising a lot more regularly since I moved and have focused on cardio (bike) and free weights. It's been a couple years since I tested my legs to see if my shin splints were still there, so I thought I'd give the treadmill a shot.

I started off at a light jog and was okay. I then kicked it into a faster gear and basically had the shin splint pain running up both my legs in about 2 minutes.

I wish there was a surgery to just fix this, because I want to participate in school basketball games and other sporting events, but I can't :(

arrrrgh..I feel your pain. I had shin splints twice in high school when I ran track. Funny though...once I grew up, had kids, kept jogging and walking, they never bothered me again. Get those babies taken care of..

This is probably a stupid question but, what are shin splints?

Shin spints are pain in the lower leg brought about (usually) by running, esp. when starting running or after a particularly intense workout. I personally only ever get them if it's been a looong time since I've run last, but some people get them pretty regularly & they can be quite uncomfortable.

There are a couple of good threads about them:

My advice usually is that if you're starting to ramp up your running, you just have to push through them. Stretch before AND AFTER you run, and after a while they'll be a distant memory.

If they're a chronic condition & you always get them, I'd recommend a visit to a sports medicine doc.

At this point, I would definitely classify it as chronic. It may be time for me to see the slew of sports doctors again. Last time I did this was in high school.
