Agreed - a wheel-driven 300 MPH on land is an impressive rate of speed even today - it was an incredible phenomenon in 1935...

And Bill France used to give the local Daytona Beach high school bands seats in the Campbell grandstands for the Daytona 500 (after we played the national anthem before the race). Ah, the good old days before the "pre-race glamor show" began. (I do remember them having Paul Newman come up on the stage and wave to the crowd while the bands were standing on the infield, but that was about the extent of the media show.)

what is todays record?

I believe with internal combustion engines around 450 MPH..Mickey Thompson?

Jet engine(s) 660 MPH? Craig Breedlove or Summer Brothers? Or was it that guy from England?

I could be way off on these numbers and drivers.

Do we know what happens when a vehicle on land breaks the sound barrier? Does the sonic boom mess with it? I thought thats what happened to that last guy. The tires fell apart because of the shock wave... I should google but its more fun to chat with y'all and speculate.
