title wasnt long enough to finish the word adapters.

So I just bought a DS Lite (yea Im a bit behind the times I guess) and what do I find, but yet another proprietary adapter that falls within spec of charging through a USB port (5V with a max draw of 500mA).

So how many devices could be recharged without a "special" adapter, through a regular USB port?

Off the top of my head, my...

Nokia N800 (a mini tablet pc)
iPod
Treo 700
DS Lite
Cannon SD850IS (I will give leeway to cannon since they wouldnt be able to fit the charging circutry int here and keep the camera as small)

How much simpler would your life be if you didnt have to bring a mess of chargers with you?

Uh... Do you mean plug into a USB port and recharge? Cause an iPod can do that.

Oh wait... Ah, I see, you mean, to just use one of the USB standard plugs to plug into the iPod. While I understand, eh, I don't think it's that big a deal.

Well the iPod isnt as bad as there isnt a brick at the end. All I want is for all devices that are within spec to be able to charge via mini usb.

thats how they make their money

only in terms of accessory purchases, which, I dont know how much they get from that. But I would think saving a dollar or two by not putting in an AC->DC adapter for every device sold would be more profitable then the money they make by selling an extra adapter for every 5 or so units sold.

what i hate is those that use the USB port... but you have to have drivers installed. Creative does that - if you attach it to a computer that doesn't have the proper software, then it will LOOK like it's charging (the indicator goes on), but it's really just slowly using power.
