Deep teeth cleaning

So, I went to the dentist today and I got my teeth cleaned. My teeth were relatively dirty because I hadn't gone to the dentist in 10 months which is WAY longer than normal. After the cleaning and dental exam the dentist suggested that I come back in for a "deep cleaning". What the heck is that? I have never been offered this before from any dentist that I have ever gone to. She also said that 90% of it would be covered by my insurance (Delta dental). I have never gone to this dentist before and I only went to a new dentist because my regular dentist is ~5k miles away.

Anyone have any idea what a deep cleaning for teeth is? I like my teeth clean and if a once a year cleaning will keep my teeth super duper clean and is really effective then I would do it but I have never heard of anything like that before.

It's when the go way down under your gums and scrape it all out. It's usually done when you have larger "pockets" between your root and gums. I've had it done once. They had to do it in two sitting because they have to numb you and didn't want to numb my entire mouth at once. Anyway, it's normally suggested by the dentist if he sees the start of periodontal disease. But I'm surprised it wasn't explained to you in full.

When they were measuring the pockets (sticking the little tool in there and callin out a number between 1 and 5 for each tooth) it's usually suggested when the majority of your teeth are in the 3-5 range.

yeah im sure they do measure your pockets sinc ethis sounds like its probally quite expensive

I had never heard of it either. I am in Hawaii because it is the beginning of the implementation of my plan to take over the world. Mwuhahahaha! Ok, I am really just out here for work.

Interesting. Thank you for the info. :) They tried to sell me a bunch of things while I was there, so I guess I'll chock it up to that.

I did have quite a few teeth in the 3 range but they have been like that for a long time. I used to brush my teeth way, way too hard when I was in high school and the beginning of college. I have learned not to do that anymore. I thought they offered it to me b/c I didn't go to the dentist in the spring, like I normally do.
