I just got put in for a "Spot Award" for stuff that I have been working on lately. My manager's manager put my name in for the award. It isn't a bunch of money but I work for a large company and my manager's manager reports directly to one of the Senior VPs which means the Senior VP is the one who has to approve it. This is a great thing for me! :)

A spot award is an award given for going above and beyond what is required. It isn't a bonus which would be a large(r) payout but a small amount of $$$ and recognition for your efforts. It also provides good "visibility" for your work which is important when going for promotions or a highly desired position.
