Don't try this at home:

Alex Roy has a crazy dream: to beat the legendary Cannonball Run record by crossing the country in under 32 hours and 7 minutes. Floor it!

Be sure to scope the links as well. Sorry about the print dialog - just click cancel - I like having it all on one page...

Very cool. But:

front-and-rear-mounted sensors for a Valentine One radar/laser detector

I think that has to be a mistake, as Valentine makes no rear-mounted devices or any way to couple detectors. It does have the equivalent of two radar and two laser detectors built into one unit. Then again, they may have had someone hack/hotwire two together, but there's only one in the video.

H <---loves his V1, and has it mounted the same way as the M5 in the video, more or less.

Dude... I'd love to try something like this. But I know I never will. Actually, thinking about it, nah.

I'd much rather enjoy a quick road trip than worry about minutes.

Cool read. That vehicle of his sounds bad a$$!

Just finished reading this and came to post it. Too late. Maybe it's just because I'm into racing, but this was one of the coolest articles I've read in a while.

I doubt if it's ever been beaten from west to east! I'll go with ya SL. Wanna meet in CA sometime? Heh..

I have averaged better time for almost 1/2 the country. I would never drive like that in such a "loud" vehicle. Black sedan, thank you.

Including gas/leak/food stops?

Daedalus

Yeah. I knew I would be pushing it, so I recorded miles, departure time and arrival time. However, I didn't realize it was that big a deal until I read that article. I recall stopping for food/bathroom 1x, and bathroom only 1x. I don't recall the gas stops, but there must have been 2 of them (probably with the food and bathroom stops). The route is everything though. The vast majority of my trip was through BFE southwestern interstate roads at night. V1 proved itself several times.

I wouldn't do it ever again. It was dangerous. I'll claim the young and stupid defense. I'm still a hair younger than the guy in the article though.

Another thing...at the time I believed that if I DID get pulled over, I would only get a very expensive ticket. I now understand that I would most likely have been charged with a criminal act and put in jail...and rightfully so.

So you are saying you traveled the "center" of the country (ie the midwest or a little further west)?

Daedalus

Boulder to L.A. The roads between Denver and Vegas and between Vegas and L.A. were desolate.

Moot point...It looks like I have to retract my claim. I had recorded the trip as just under 1300 miles. Mapquest says just under 1100 miles. I can't rationalize the difference. Maybe I misread a 6 for an 8 on the odometer.

Yeah its all about route choices... although these days its all about traffic patterns. Even crossing the 10 or 210 at 2 am has traffic and enough of it that you can't blow by much more than 95 without getting into bad situations...
30 hours hmm... I guess if you left new york at 8 or 9 pm so traffic was light on the east, you spend your day in the middle avoiding the big cities and then you finished up crossing az or nv the next evening and you could hit the pier around 3-4 am the next day? In the movies they all start like midday, but i could never see that being a reasonable plan.

Many years ago, a bunch of us drove from Philly to Fort Lauderdale (about 1300 miles) in about 19 hours. I remember stopping to eat for an hour. Considering that we had to pass through some cities, that wasn't great but not too shabby.
