View Full Version : $250 Best Buy Bucks - PS3 or XB360?

I received $250 in Best Buy gift certificates over the last couple of months, mostly for my birthday. I'm ready to get a new console, and even though I've been leaning more towards the 360 lately, I can't deny my love affair with the PS1 and PS2 (and PSP). Should I break free of this pattern, and head to the 360? Or should I stay true to what I know I've always loved, which is Playstation gaming? Help me please, my good friends. Help me make the right decision.

Currently, I only own a Wii. However, I will be picking up a 360 soon. Part of it is the price, but a larger part of it is the games. I can think of at least 3 games off the top of my head on 360 that I want to play (Halo 3,Bioshock, and Mass Effect), and no PS3 exclusives that I care about.

This is purely personal, but if I were in your shoes, I would highly take into consideration their HD-DVD or B-ray playing capabilities.
Or...
Here's a unique, one-of-a-kind suggestion that has never come up in any of these threads: give it to me! I'll put it to good use!!

Everything I've heard says the 360 instead of the PS3, simply speaking good games-wise. I don't have either, although we'd love to get a 360. :(

360. Hands down.
What types of games do you like to play?
Without waiting for your response, I would rank it this way:
XBox360 - Most developed system because it is older. Most titles because it is older. Great online capabilities and the system is essentially an HTPC.
Wii - Cheap, great fun for parties, but is boring when you're playing alone. Novelty of playing games by flailing your arms (trust me, it is even better when you're inebriated)
PS3 - It's an expensive paperweight and Sony will be losing the exclusivity of Final Fantasy. GG Sony.

that's awesome b/c i'm in the similar situation. except i've got another month before my bday, so i'm hoping for a little more GCs coming my way, and maybe drop them for a LCD/plasma Tv or something.
but i'm also leaning towards the 360 b/c of a few games as well.

XBox360. There are no really good system games for the PS3 yet. Plus, HD-DVD will probably win that war.

My preference would be (in this order):
1) Wii (but that's because I have young kids)
2) Xbox360
3) Buy a bunch of movie DVDs
4) Put the GC's through a shredder
5) PS3

As an owner of all three, and after logging many hours playing Gears of War, Halo 3 and Bioshock. I agree the 360 is the way to go.
Although Resistance: Fall of Man and the new Ratchet and Clank are good, there really arent that many games worth playing on the PS3.
I would go
1. 360
2. Wii
3. PS3
My .02
PS. Is anyone else out there a sucker for the splitter in Wii baseball like me? I know it's coming and can't lay off of it. Grrrr.

I have all three and my 360 gets the most usage. It has great exclusive games and all of the multiplatform games run better on the 360 right now.
I've owned my PS3 for a year and I only have one game for it which I bought last week (Eye of Judgement). It's a very disappointing machine.
The worst part is that looking forward, I see many more 360 games coming out that I'm excited about and ZERO PS3 games that remotely look interesting.

On this topic, does anybody know of any good deals for the xbox 360? I've been thinking about getting the 360 premium w/ HDMI (maybe packaged with Forza 2 and that other game), an additional wireless controller + Halo 3 for about 400 bucks before Christmas. Do you guys think this will be possible maybe after thanksgiving?
Also, what is your take on a refurbished system? Do they have any refurbished ones available w/ HDMI?
TIA!

there are never sales on consoles, so just forget that right off the bat. They've been price fixed for years.
As for refurbished, I dunno. I've seen say, refurbed monitors or PC's run for years, and have seen refurbed xboxes die in a month. My feeling would be to stay away from a refurbed 360.
You may be able to get a used XBox360 with HDMI on fleabay, but like LPM said, you'll have a really hard time getting it discounted from a store.

A Furby has a warranty with it also. Sometimes they even let you buy the 'Extended Warranty.'

Is the Wii as much fun as I hear it is? I'm considering either a Wii or a 360

The Wii is fun, but other than the few games they are known for, Mario, Zelda, & Metroid for example, I'm finding the game selection isn't that great at this point.
I got the Wii because I have young kids and I figure over time they'll enjoy it, but I'm kinda wishing I had bought the 360 as there is a lot more gamed I'd play on it instead of waiting for more good games to come out.

this thread breaks my heart. I really want to get a PS3, but no one seems to be buying them. Are they ever going to catch up?

Just recently some games were released for the PS3 that have been getting great reviews and can't be found anywhere else. I think it's just going to pick up steam from here.

I have all 3 and to be honest, I've been playing the PS3 the most. When I get games, I would get it for the PS3 over the Xbox. I really don't know why. I mean the other day I got Call of Duty 4 for the PS3. A week later I got Assasin's Creed for the PS3. I guess I like the PS3 more because you have a built in wifi, bluetooth, usb support, and the hd. Plus it's more of an entertainment system than the xbox. I uploaded an assload of mp3's and pictures. And I was also able to put some skin flicks on it too.

Thanks for the advice guys. I bought my XBox 360 on Black Friday and have been loving it ever since. This is going to sound lame but I rented Halo 3 and I didn't care for it too much. However I haven't had any experience with it in the past so maybe I just need to spend some time learning the back story. Also, I don't have the system hooked up to the internet yet, which is where I hear Halo 3 is amazing. I'll probably do that soon. In the meantime, I am enjoying the few games that I bought. The system looks so amazing on my Vizio 42".
I am planning on getting Assasins Creed pretty soon. I heard it is aresome.

I was going to get the xbox 360, but I think i'm going to wait a bit and then get the ps3. I think the 360 is still the best for the next 6 months to a year, but as ps3 comes out with some good games, it will be a contender. Besides, the tech specs are so much better w/ the ps3. I'm just holding off and hoping there is something conclusive coming out of the format wars. Hopefully there will be a sign of a winner relatively soon.

eSDeeLoco, you like it? How are the graphics? I have an HD tv, I really want to see how the 360 would play on it

I do like it, although I suck at shooters at the moment, which is odd. I wonder if I'll ever be as good as I am on keyboard and mouse. But other than that, the system looks amazing on my Vizio 42 inch HDTV ($999). I am very happy with the purchase, although I'm probably going to get the PS3 anyway.

Get Rock Band!!!!! SOOOOO much more fun that Halo. Of course, I'm the same girl who jumps when she plays Halo 2 because the Flood are coming at her.....

Sigh... I've got buyers remorse. The games aren't really doing it for me like I thought. It could be that I'm getting too old for video games (I seriously hope this isn't the case) but I haven't really enjoyed playing the Xbox 360 since I got it. I think that one big thing is that I am also using it as my DVD player, and gah dam if that thing isn't loud and hot! At this point, I really wish that I could have the Blue Ray that comes on the PS3. Plus I have so many old PS2 games that I could easily throw them in the PS3 if I wanted to.
Oh well, maybe it'll pass. If not, then I'll be unloading this cheap so I can get a PS3.

You should have got a DS lite....
I got an XBOX 360 2 months ago for Christmas, and it got me to quit WoW. If it weren't for Mass Effect and Rock Band, I would be wasting 4 straight hours every other night in an MMORPG! (not to say I'm playing 4 hours of XBOX 360 :P)
I'm hearing more and more of PS3 gaining interest among geeks, even though the games situation heavily favors the 360.
I have zero regrets, even with the Blu-Ray win. My $60 DVD player from Costco upconverts to the same 42" Vizio LCD with darn good quality, so regular DVDs look "good enough".

Glad that guy got banned ;)
Actually I started playing Call of Duty 4 a lot lately and I really enjoyed it. I was super terrible when I started but got better towards the end. I think I am getting the hang of the controls finally.
Gears of War 2 is coming out this fall. PS3 titles in the pipeline...they have Blu-Ray!
