Take a look at the car. It appears that only the hood is crumpled. But the witness said the car was going like a rocket. If it were going really fast, the car would be totalled. And it caused the floor to collapse?

One dead after part of SouthPark parking deck collapses:

A witness said a woman trying to enter a parking deck at SouthPark mall today hit a wall at high speed, causing a partial collapse of the deck.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, said Mecklenburg EMS Agency spokesman Eric Morrison. Authorities said there were no other injuries.

"I think it's miraculous, quite honest, given what happened, that there are no other confirmed injuries," Hill said.

A portion of the third level of the deck between Nieman Marcus and Nordstrom, facing Sharon Road, collapsed onto the second level.

Rod Hodnett said he was on the deck when he saw a green Hyundai, driven by an older woman, stuck on a curb at the entrance to the third level. The car was at first unable to move, she said, then shot forward across the length of the deck.

"She just went like a rocket," Hodnett said. "She just came off and hit the wall and the entire thing collapsed."

Hodnett, who moved to help the woman get her car off the curb, said the woman clutched her chest before the accident. "I think she maybe mistook the gas for the brake."

He rushed to the Hyundai again after the crash, and saw the woman slumped inside.

Portions of the deck were closed off at 1 p.m., but the mall was still open. At least four firetrucks, several paramedic trucks and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Mobile Command Post was at the scene.

Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Rob Brisley said two cars under the collapse were destroyed. He said investigators are now working to identify the cause of the collapse and determine whether the deck is stable.

Maybe she had a heart attack? I think it's odd that they car isn't THAT damaged and yet she died.

She probably was dead before the crash...

The attack, then her foot jammed the gas... and into the wall.

JMK...

As far as "rocket speed" goes... well, on foot... going 20 to 40 MPH may seem "rocket fast" for a short distance, I'd doubt that she was going much faster than that in a parking garage (I'd estimate less than 10 seconds from gas to impact for the length of most garages). Either way with the impact, she was probably dead before she hit the wall due to a heart attack (like Layla said). :D

Also... looking at that photo, it looks like the rail took out alot of the energy from the impact (therefore the car didn't fully cumple as it would if she had hit a solid brick wall...)

I agree with DF. When you consider how fast we drive in/on parking structures, anything over 15-20 mph will seem rocket fast to a lot of people.

Layla is also probably right about the heart attack. I notice that the air bags have deployed but hard to see whether seat belts were used. (they should be hanging loose and unable to retract after a front end accident because of the pretensioners.)
So if she's passed I would think heart attack.

I've been in that parking garage.

Sounds like heart attack or stroke to me, too. Bet that's why she got hung up on the curb to start with...

I know what's fishy about this accident. The witness said the Hyundai "went like a rocket."
How many Hyundais do you know that could go like a rocket?

Of course I kid, I used to speed like crazy in my Hyundai. The heart attack seems to make sense IMO.

I was about to say that how can you go fast in a Hyundai. :P

Usually, to make them go fast, you just have to put 4 grossly obese people in one and then push it down a steep cliff.

Here's another photo. Still doesn't look like it would be enough to cause a collapse of the floor.

I could imagine that a very large truck hitting a column would do the trick, but this lightweight car causing that damage?

I bet you that's what it was, she died before or during the impact of something else. It wouldn't have been the accident
