RS232 setup

I know there are a lot of technical-minded people on this board, so maybe someone can help me. I got this solenoid that I want my computer to control. It's got an RS232 connection and I know what each of the 9 pins are for. Anyone familiar with this type of setup? I'm kinda clueless as to how to start. I'm thinking of getting a pci card and programming the solenoid through labview. Maybe a link or comment on how to go about this?
