Training the local police department some years ago on how to use the computer and training them in online pedophile investigations.
Sure glad the pay checks have stop arriving for this type of work for me.
When the county and feds started training programs I was out off a job I never really cared to have but a part of me is glad I was able to help.

Getting to talk to my kids online when they are at their fathers house because he never goes near the computer and doesnt allow them to call me when they want to.

Keeping in contact with my best friend from High School who lives in Rochester with his wife and kids...usually equates to about 13 emails a day!

Using it to find EXCELLENT deals on the stuff I want, communications with various folks who I consider my "online family", and it provides me with lots of "paid for entertainment" so that I don't waste too much money doin' other stuff in RL. :D

in touch with lot of friends via emails (mailing is easier than talking to someone, who isnt that close, but you still keep in touch once in a while)

Thats well done!

I would say catching up with friends lost and keeping in touch and meeting new friends. The social aspect's pretty sweet.

I like my music...

For a social "best practice" probably giving up those unused CPU cycles for a better cause. I started with SETI and then moved on to the World Community Grid project working on 2 human proteome folding projects, FightAIDS@Home, and Muscular Dystrophy.
