Had the tv on for background distraction this weekend and Discovery had the Deadliest Catch marathon on... wow. I never realized what these guys really went through. New respect for crab fishermen (and crab fishermen cameramen)! Anyone else catch the series?

I have watched it before. It appears to be very dangerous in the waters they are in. And yes, I have a great respect for these guys.

It's a great show. Those guys really bust their butt for a living. Did anyone see the practical joke with the flour? It was hilarious.

True, I wouldn't/couldn't do their job...

But they get paid quite well for 2 to 4 weeks worth of work... and they earn that money. :heh:

I was sad in the episode where the ship sank and only one guy made it. Not sure if they lost the film crew either.

Caught the series last season. Really dangerous. I don't complain about the price of King Crab anymore.

It was a boat that didn't have a film crew on it.

I took a boat tour of Seattle this past weekend and we went by all of the fishing boats. I have pictures of the Wizard and the Northwestern.

It was kinda of a celebrity sighting for me :)

yeah, i have that in my dvr. the silly thing with the prices is that yeah, they make good dough, but when they talk about it... they're selling to the wholesalers at a fraction of the cost that we buy them at.

also, it's not just 2-4 weeks. they have like a month before hand and a week+ after to prep and tidy up. so... more like 2-3 months.
on a good boat, a greenie can get close to 30k so, i guess that's nice, but some of the bad boats, it's like 1/2 that or maybe less.

after that, you gotta figure out how to make money the rest of the time you're there....

still though, i kinda wish I was young and stupid, cuz I would love to do that...

I LOVE this show..and I wouldn't kick Phil Harris from the Cornelia Marie outta my bed for eating crackers..he's such an old salt...grrrrrrrrrrrrrr hehehe. There is just something about him that is appealing to me..it's not looks, because he's really just a normal looking guy..maybe it's his demeanor, anyway, he, and Andy Hilstrand from the Time Bandit are my no. 1 favs..I'm going to be watching the marathon..and on the plus side, MIKE ROWE (purrrrrrrrrrrr) from Dirty Jobs narrates..it's the best of both worlds! I'm not a fan of Sig Hansen..that guy is so arrogant. Now if Edgar Hansen was the captain that would make my day! The last count for the opie run this week had the Cornelia Marie at 1 MILLION POUNDS..Phil was in the lead and that made me happy happy..

Ok.. you are playing the specifics here.

The 2 to 4 weeks is the actual "DEADLY" part of the job to earn their money.

Do you earn $40K in like 2 to 3 months? I sure don't. For the amount of time spent, they do make good cash on those boats, plus you figure that they can have multiple "seasons" running concurrently which would cut down on the amount of "down time" between what catch they were after.

And if they weren't out fishing, if you've made your money then you could possibly do whatever you want with the rest of your time. Depending on your family situation, if you are out on the boat, then you probably aren't maintaining a household that is incurring all kinds of bills (since you are living on the boat), car expenses go way down (not buying any gas while out to sea) and everything else that is provided on the boat (like meals, laundry, and whatever else...)

I'm just saying... their work is hard, and they get paid well for it, however for the risk invloved, I'd still have to pass on it. I don't think I could work for 36 hours straight without falling flat on my face.

As far as wholesale versus retail... well that goes without saying. :)
