Now starts the trek. We start going on our route around 11am, driving around 60-70mph to optimize our mpg. We get to Reno, and we have dinner there. I try my luck busting $20 on blackjack. As odds would have it, (and what casinos use to make money) I lose my money because statistics are not on my side. I was up by $5 at one point, but then, it was all down hill from there =) but it was fun. (as much fun as you can have losing $20)
The first night, we stayed in a rest area in Nevada. My parents slept in the car, and I slept outside on the sidewalk. It was such a nice night outside, I just laid out on the sidewalk spread eagle and had a good time falling asleep under the stars. I didn’t have a good sleep tho, I kept on scaring myself that somebody was gonna rob me during the night, or a highway patrol officer was gonna ask me to not sleep on the sidewalk, so I kept on waking up during the night to make sure nobody was there =)
The next day, more driving was had and we reached Idaho...drove though that state all day. I must say, Idaho is one of the most boring states I’ve ever been in. Just fields of potatoes, as far as the eye can see. After driving Idaho all day, we reach the border of Yellowstone. By now, it’s night time, so there is no point of going in to see darkness, so we stay the night, and the next morning we bust Yellowstone. WOW, such a pretty place. It kinda sucked because it was raining, (and eventually snowing). But we saw all the key places of Yellowstone, got to see old faithful blow steam (barely could see because of the snow). It was good times none the less. (I’ll post pics later) There are interesting stuff at good ol yellow stone. Since it was snowing so much, I didn’t see much yellow at all, but I made stuff yellow myself. Then was the task of getting out of Yellowstone. By the time we wanted to leave, it was MASSIVELY snowing. Wow, the roads get massively slick when it snows. I had to drive down reallllly carefully, but we made it down in one piece (after lots of sliding around the road)
Now, on our trek to Mt Rushmore. On our way there, we have to go really high up in the mountains of Wyoming. Holy crap, was it snowing up there, and what makes it even more scary is the fact that we’re driving on a mountain in the middle of the night while it’s massively snowing. I couldn’t see jack squat. So after driving for 3 hours at 5 mph in the dense snow, in the middle of the night, we decided that we needed to stop driving so we won’t slip off the side of the mountain. We see light in the distance to we decided to head towards that, we drive into the driveway of these cabins, and lo and behold, we get stuck in the snow. ****!!!! I can’t move the car at all…it’s stuck. But all of a sudden, 3 chicks come out of nowhere and pushes the car out of the snow, we were grateful for their help. One of the chicks asks if she could drive us down the hill to a little motel for us to stay the night, I gladly gave her the keys to the car, it was really sketch tho, you can totally smell beer from her breath, but I’m far more confident I her driving skills while under the influence, than my skills driving through the snow sober. So she got us to motel safely. The 2 other girls followed us down the hill so they could take the girl that drove us back, there was a bar next door, and asked if I wanted to join them for a drink. Why not right? Heheh. So I unpacked the car and the stuff in the room, and then I joined them for a drink. It was good times getting to know them and such. They’re all really nice people. They introduced me to a money microbrew called Moose drool. It’s a money ale from Minnesota. Good times. Whats also good times was that it was only $2.50 per brew. So I was down with that. Anywho, these chicks were good people for helping us, and it was good times talking with that. But I must say, I hate Wyoming. =)
Anywho, the next day, they plowed the roads and we were able to get on our way. We now start our trek to Mt. Rushmore. We get there, expecting to see 4 massive heads carved into a granite mountain. What do we see instead? Lots of rain and massive fog. DAMMIT!!!! When the hell am I ever gonna be South Dakota again? Sighhhhhhhhhh. Well, we drove a massive amounts of miles to see rain and fog. Stupid weather. We talked to the rangers, and they said yesterday was really nice, and the next day was supposed to be really nice, but that day we went…they don’t know why it’s like that. Like I said before, I hate the weather. We were SUPPOSED to get there the day before, but noooooooooo, a snow storm had to come and get us stuck up there in a Wyoming mountain.
Anywho, the point is, we didn’t get to see Mt. Rushmore. Oh well. Now comes the icing on the cake. We’re driving through South Dakota, after leaving rushmore, and we decide to go to a rest area because the wind and rain were massively blowing, so we thought it would be best to call it the night. Anywho, we get to the rest area, we wanna cook some food, anywho, I leave the keys in the car, and my dad decides to lock the car. That’s too bad… keys in a car when the car is locked. GREAT….that just topped off the day. Good thing I had my wallet with me. So I called AAA, and they sent over a locksmith to open our car. I felt really bad because the locksmith had to drive an hour to open our car. (it was like 12.30am when he got to us) He somehow managed to open our car with using a improvised clothes hanger, needless to say, I was very impressed at his skills opening the car in the massive wind, pouring rain, and scrotum freezing weather.
We finally get into the car, we bust out the sleeping bags in the car and fall asleep. And today, we drive all day to finally get to Winnipeg Manitoba. Its good to see family and finally have a place to just sit down. It’s been intense these past few days, but it’s been fun.
now i'm down in WI at my uncles place....it's money here...i'll post more later =)
