Yeah baby - the Pistons blew their chance at beating LA again (heh), so I'm counting on the Wings to bring ONE championship to Detroit this year ('cuz we know the Tigers or the Lions won't do it!)

I think they're talking about some kind of athletic cup. You know...athletes need them....

Ok, I am not a huge Hockey fan, but what is the symbolism of tossing a squid or octopus on the ice?

Ok, I am not a huge Hockey fan, but what is the symbolism of tossing a squid or octopus on the ice?

Back in the day it only took 8 wins to win the cup.

Here's a more thorough explanation:

The Motor City's proud tradition of saluting the Detroit Red Wings with slimy creatures of the deep dates back over half a century.

The first octopus landed on the ice during the Red Wings' 1952 Stanley Cup run, courtesy of brothers Pete and Jerry Cusimano, who owned a fish market. If you know your cephalopods, you will know that an octopus has eight tentacles. In those days it took eight playoff wins to claim the Cup, hence the supposed symbolism of the gesture.

The Red Wings were perfect in the '52 playoffs, sweeping the semifinal and the final in straight games. The octopus has been a good luck charm ever since.

By 1995, the team had adopted the tradition by introducing a mascot, Al the Octopus. Al is raised to the rafters of Joe Louis Arena before every home playoff game, and used in team merchandising and promotion.

Wow....I just got a mental picture of some hockey player trying to stuff the Stanley Cup into his pants...:)

I just wish the Pens would wake the hell up. They seem to be playing so tentative to me. I mean, Detroit's not even the most physical team in the West and they're essentially mowing over the Pens.

Detroit's best chance to win the cup will be in Pittsburgh because I think if the Pens can take the next game at home, look out... they may have all the confidence to pull the upset.

(I can only hope!)

:| I guess congrats Wings. Don't get too attached to Stanley. He won't be back next year. But take care of him.

Hopefully Malkin was hurt...bad...otherwise he played the 6 worst games of his young career and hopefully has a chance to redeem himself....soon, half of the time his passes...which were perfect were right TO Wings players
