I saw a review on Newegg about a Seagate( may have been Samsung) 1 TB internal hard drive. Several of the readers commented that they ran extremely hot, but may have been defective to start with.

I am considering the installation of one or two large capcity SATA hard drives in a small form factor case. But if they are hard to cool, I will drop the idea.

My Seagate 1TB drive does run very hot -- but I've heard the Samsung is much better in this regard.

In my experience the seagate perpendicular drives run hot. I imagine they are designed to run hot so I don't wory too much. It doesn't have to do with SATA vs PATA or anything.
