and if so, are you happy doing it?
if not, would you rather be doing what you dreamed of? Or are you happy where you are?

Forgot to answer my own question.
So, when i was a little kid, I always wanted to be a baseball player, but I don't got those skills....so no.
Later on in highschool, I wanted to be a teacher. I'm not a teacher, but I feel like I'm getting opportunities to experience aspects of teaching that I thought I would enjoy through my church- that is mentoring and helping to influence others in a positive way.

I always wanted to be a mechanic like my father, and did it for nearly 20 years. Got a torque multiplier to the noggin and now I'm changing career fields. :D

kinda. I wanted to join the military and be a journalist.
I couldn't pass the physical.
I also wanted to be able to stay home with my kids if I had kids. And I have been able to do that for the most part (small jobs retail jobs here and there).
Thought about being a lot of things since my youngest will be heading to school soon. Thinking about ASL interpreter.

As for me, my dream was always to be able to do nothing. So I guess that means being wealthy, and I'm working towards that. I'd say on that front im ahead of the bell curve for my age and background (a lot of it through dumb luck)

I dreamed of being a doctor. When I was through with engineering school, I started to take some of the prereqs (e.g. bio-chem, o-chem, bio, etc..) that I did not have as a EE. I then realized how in debt I would be after med school and how much a pain med school was going to be. Plus all of my friends who were either docs or in med school at the time talked me out of it. Sometimes I wonder what if but most of the time I am happy with my career field. One thing is for sure, I probably would not get to travel as much for work if I was a doc.

I can't remember what I wanted to be as a kid. In highschool I think I wanted to genetically modify stuff and I'm not doing that.

I don't remember what I wanted to be anymore.. cause it changed so often. In forth grade, I started a protest rally on the playground to protest the war in the middle east (The First gulf War) .. I'm not really overtly involved in politics currently though.

Politician?.....hell no, politics angers me too much, this country's getting too liberal for me.
As for student, for the next four years. Criminal Justice Admin. Then Master. Classes start mid July @ University of Phoenix. Just waiting for test results and loan to come through for completion of enrollment and schedule.
Studying to become a criminalist.

I always wanted to be a car designer. During the last year at Drexel, I prepared a portfolio of car designs. Only General Motors would listen to a guy who was about to graduate from an engineering school. So they flew me out to Dearborn, Michigan and let me tour the Advanced Styling Studio. They offered me a job as a liason between the guys who did the 1/2 scale clay models and engineering. I was too proud to take that job, because I wanted to be a stylist.
BTW, there were only six stylists there at the time. They wanted me to refine my skills and take a two year course at their design school if I wanted that job. But I was too tired from 5 years at Drexel. So I dropped the idea. There was a downturn in the economy a few years later and I am not sure if i would have been out of a job there.
I got subsequent jobs working for the Navy and ended up working for NJDOT as a spec writer for highway equipment. I absolutely loved that job. I guess I didn't know what was best for me when I was younger.

Hmmm... when I was a kid, I kinda thought I'd already be dead at the age I am right now so I'm pretty happy with the way my life is going (heck, just with the fact that my life is still going at all).

Hey, DF - why do you feel like you are stuck in a rut? In a position that isn't challenging anymore or you just don't like your job?
I always wanted to be in the military. A lifer. I wanted to die on a battlefield. That dream died when I passed out getting gassed in basic training.
Now I make databases for law firms. Much more exciting :|

Hey, DF - why do you feel like you are stuck in a rut? In a position that isn't challenging anymore or you just don't like your job?
Pretty much I've worked for the same employer for the past 15 years... In that time, I've seen my career sort of stall and get sidetracked.
Due to "downsizing/rightsizing/whatever "buzzword" you wanna fit in there" our budgets have been squeezed to the limit. They have cut off almost all "non critical" travel, all training, limited supplies, and pretty much have a "do more with less" attitude now (which in alot of cases most positions are "one deep" with no backups in case the main person responsible is not there...)
Essentially this kinda locks you into position somewhat... depending on your job. In my case, due to a re-org... I got tossed into a position that was not really in line with what I was originally brought in to do. I was treated as a "hot body" to fill a space... whereas before, I was in a position where I was the "subject matter expert" and pretty much knew all of the ins and outs of the position.
Either way, this has led to much of my "job satisfaction reduction" as jobs like mine get fed to outside contractors more and more. The pay is decent here, so pretty much I just can't walk away from it considering that I have various responsibilities to cover (like my kid, my house payment, my car payment... etc...) therefore pretty much I now feel more like a "number" punching a clock versus feeling like a "needed asset" doing wonderful things and whatnot for the benefit of my agency.
More or less, I would LOVE to be able to tell them "take this job and shove it"... however financially I can't do that. I really would like to see my talents grow possibly in a business venture of my own, however right now I just can't accept the risk of doing that (maybe I'm just afraid... I dunno.)
Either way, as a kid, I wanted to be "my own boss"... and run my own company. Right now, that just isn't happening therefore that's why I say that I'm NOT doing what I dreamed I would be. I do have my own "side gig" doing what I do best, but honestly, it's not enough to put food on the table and sustain my lifestyle hence I'm just feeling "trapped by my existence" I suppose.
/sigh...

I hope you don't mind me asking - who do you work for? That just made me think of Who does number two work for? :heh: Have you looked at changing companies, since you seem to be pigeon holed?
i wanted to be an architect for years, and then took an economics course and decided i wanted to go start my own business. i'm in grad school for my mba, i'm working in corporate finance, and i run my own business on the side. so i guess i'm in the "kinda" category.

Wow, DF, you never seemed unhappy about anything. I hope the position goes better for you in the future. Heck, I'm 40 and literally starting all over, I won't graduate until age 44, and then another 2 years of full time after that. (or is it 3?)

I don't want to point that out directly...
Needless to say, I do work for the Gubment... in an agency that is shrinking at an alarming rate (due to both retirements and downsizing).

I'm a no and a kinda. Kinda cause I wanted to be in a service industry - I could never see myself just "making" something or "selling" something all day. I figured I'd have to do something principally involved in working with people - and that's where I'm at now.
No. Because I never wanted to go into church ministry. It's specifically one of the fields I did not want to do. Go figure that that's what I do now, and that I'm happier for it.
