Initially, I didn't care for the new Challengers when I saw the prototypes in magazines. Now that I have seen them "live", I really like them.

i don't, they look like someone took a real muscle car and made it fat.

I could take it or leave it - it's a nice looking car & just seems to be begging someone to do a brake torque in it. However, there's just a tiny bit too much of a mullet air about it.

i love to see a line up of the all new challenger r/t , mustang shelby ,and a camero Z . go up one on one to there big brothers they were designed after. on a street race and see what ones come out winning the races .from a dead stop in one race . and one race from a rolling start lets say 45-50 to a stomp on the peddle. im saying sure you get reports from test done under control environments . but i like to see real street race results .and im guessing the old versions would leave the new versions in a cloud of burnt rubber !

I'm not sure about the old ones leaving the new ones in a cloud of burnt rubber. The older cars had carburetors, primitive electronics and mediocre fuel distribution. The best that most factory cars could turn was in the low 13s in the quarter mile, with some in the high 12s.

However, many were lighter and you could get a variety of rear axle raios which could optimize quarter mile times.

Big blocks were also available back then in all three major companies. Chrysler had the 426, GM had the 421, 427, 454 and 455, while Ford had the 427,428 and 429 and 460. Some ran better than their small block cousins and others didn't.

Today, big blocks are somewhat limited throughout the industry.

I am sure there are some comparisons to be found in some car magazines. And from the times I have noted in some magazines, the new cars are pretty amazing.

I saw one on the road Sunday.

I had been saving up my truck payment for about a year and half since it was paid off.

It's in the house now. :(

I hate having to be responsible. It's just not as much fun.

some old ones would win, and some new ones would win.

some of the old ones were just considered "dogs." but then some were true beasts.

where modern technology has helped with some model engines, in a lot of cases this has been used to scale down some of the engines in size. the new shelby mustang, as it turns out, is sometimes not as quick as the original offerings.

so i'd say it's a big "it depends." as in, depends on which one you're talking about, and what kind of race.

Well... the "Lengendary 426" HEMI probably would run roughshod over the pack... unfortunately with the amount of gas it would burn, that would have to be a VERY short race. :D

Checked a few websites: some claim that the new Challenger is a bit faster, others a bit slower(the low 13s). The weight difference is about 400 pounds.

The 2008 rear axle ratio is 3.06 for automatics, and numerically higher for stick shifts. The older Chaellenger had ratios in the 4s, which can really aid in 1/4 mile times. I don't know what the diameter of the new Challenger's tires is. I suspect that they are fairly tall as compared to the old 15" tires. Taller tires are not great for a muscle car's 1/4 mile times, especially when combined with a 3.06 rear axle ratio.

So I suspect that if 400 pounds were shaved from the new Challenger combined with a much higher numerical rear axle ratio, the 1/4 mile times would easily be in the 12s.

one thing there is no doubt about with the newer versions. that is there steering / handling has improved.

Funny thing is... I was at a car show a few years back and this guy showed up with one of those "Legendary 426s" modified to a race car...

OMFG... it was ridiculously loud and scary. The sound that car made probably scared children for a 10 block radius. :heh:

I woulda loved to see him do a drag pass with that car.... that woulda been simply amazing.

No such thing as a "six-pack" (three two-barrel carbs) on a 426 Hemi (http://www.allpar.com/mopar/hemi/hemi.html) from the factory. Two four-barrels, but no three twos.

440 could be had in '69 and '70 with three twos, and the 340 AAR 'Cuda could as well, but not the Hemi.

Honestly, it's not like that photo hasn't been posted before... nor like the fact that most of us already know what the car looks like. :D

But thanks for the effort of posting the photo. :thumb:

Nothing ever sounded as awesome as the original Hemi...nothing !!
