The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a 27 kilometer (17 mile) long particle accelerator straddling the border of Switzerland and France, is nearly set to begin its first particle beam tests. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is preparing for its first small tests in early August, leading to a planned full-track test in September - and the first planned particle collisions before the end of the year. The final step before starting is the chilling of the entire collider to -271.25 C (-456.25 F). Here is a collection of photographs from CERN, showing various stages of completion of the LHC and several of its larger experiments (some over seven stories tall), over the past several years. (27 photos total)
they asked if you would keep it in your back yard? :hmm:
looks like the mirror thing from mythbusters where they tried to light a boat on fire.

I bet that's what the main beam of the Death Star looked like when they were first building it. :heh:

I would love to have the LHC in my backyard, as long as I get to talk to the people doing the experiments and tour it whenever i wanted to.
So where do I sign up?

Did the boat catch fire?
I would soooo want this in my backyard. I drove by the one at standford and was sad that people wouldn't let me stop and go visit.
These things rock! Electrons go BOOM!

I'm with most others here. I *wish* it was in my back yard, or heck even my country! Would love a tour of that place.

That thing looks awesome. I wonder if there are any high res pics of it that scan across dual monitors?

Bringing this post back cause they just started it up the other day (Which is awesome) I sure hope they find the Higgs Boson. But they probably won't. The SSC probably would have if we hadn't cut the funding to it in Dallas. :(
Oh well

hehe sorry about that. It's pretty cool. :)
I LOVE Science. Theoretical Physics is awesome.

And sigh..
Why do some hackers have to be such utter morons.

Really pisses me off. Leave CERN Alone. Attack something else please. Bunch of douchebags if you ask me.

So one of your particles is connected to one of the particles they are using? Causing Vibration in your pants whenever they vibrate the connected particle?

Wow...Why is it many people don't understand the fact that all OSes have security issues and that you have to patch and harden all of them, not just Windows.
You would think that people smart enough to run the LHC would protect their internet facing systems a little bit more.

I would take this in my backyard... because then my house would be in a nice town in beautiful mountains.
