So my 2nd hard drive crashed and silly me, haven't backed that drive up since Sept. Anyway, I tried a couple software to try and recover the data but was unsuccessful. The problem isn't physical so I don't know what the problem is. But long story short, looks like I'll need to send it in.

Can any of you guys suggest a place that can get my data back?

Have you tried reading it from another machine (or enclosure)?

The HD in my laptop failed last year. I assume it was a physical failure, based on the whirring and clicking noises it was making. I put it in an external enclosure, froze it for a couple hours, and then was able to read the drive for about 30 minutes via usb. It was long enough to get the critical data off before it totally kicked the bucket.

The freezing part was based on a suggestion from one of our IT guys. I'm sure sending it in to get restored will cost an arm and a leg. Might be worth trying a separate enclosure first.

Yeah, i had it in a separate enclosure when attempting to recover the data. But no dice. And I'm aware of the cost of sending it out to get it professionally done, unfortunately. I just have some family photos I would like to get back and am willing to pay for it...

I've used OnTrack before & they're good.

Cost varies a LOT depending on the problem with the drive, but expect to shell out anywhere from $500-2000 for them to do it.

Thanks Jeffbx. Just submitted a form for a quote. I also found that Seagate offers data recovery services. Since mine is a Seagate drive, figure I'd get in touch with them too.

Oh, even better. Go with the MFR first. Dunno if they'll be any cheaper, but you might have a better chance of a successful recovery.

Let us know how it turns out
