CHICAGO - Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper "Ocean's Eleven" and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom "The Bernie Mac Show," died Saturday at age 50.

"Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.

She said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

R.I.P Bernie!

I am in total shock over this...

Bernie Mac is one of my favorite comedians... I didn't even know he was sick.

Once again, we have lost another comedy heavyweight... Bernie, you were truly great at your craft and you will be highly missed.

R.I.P.    :neartears:

Wow, I was completely shocked at this. Bernie Mac is definitely one of my favorite comedians. I never realized he was sick. RIP. :(

I still cannot understand people dying from pneumonia. It happens all the time especially with older people or people with compromised immune systems. There is a pneumonia vaccine out there that more people should take. Bernie's death was probably related to his disease, sarcoidosis.

RIP Mr. Mac. :(

With celebrity PR and doctor privacy laws being what they are, we'll only ever hear about the "pneumonia," just like all these partying starlets need to be hospitalized for "exhaustion."

Billy Bob was in St. Louis last week and I kept thinking to myself how he looked like death warmed over.

The Bernie thing really shocked the heck out of me though. Way too young and way too talented.
