I had an interesting conversation with my sister and her new husband the other day over dinner. We were talking politics/economics when she mentioned her thoughts on moving to a different country, which is odd since I've had similar thoughts.
We also both agreed that we probably wouldnt go through with it unless we could get our parents to move as well.
So...
Assume you were being kicked out of this country, but the gov't would pull strings and get you citizenship anywhere. What country would you pick and why?

If I wasn't married... Sweden. :naughty:
My wife is in love with England and I could get a job in London with no problem so we'd most likely head there.

I'd take that as a sign from God, and I'd go to myanmar and do underground work.

After visiting Japan I've always dreamt about living and working there for about 4-5 years. There's plenty of culture to enjoy (art, music, etc) that is truly unique to Japan and doesn't follow global trends, and there's a ton to learn for my profession (residential architecture design).
However, in terms of settling down, my ultimate destination will always be the SF Bay Area.

Two places:
England, because I've been there when I lived in Germany, and I loved the place and the people. (Of course that was years ago)
Japan, so that I may finally see where my father's side of the family came from and my heritage there. Plus I love the language.

People really dont read posts here do they?
JMK why would you choose australia?
Ark, the US govt has banned you from living in the US, and unfortunately for you that means all of California too (until it breaks off and floats away that is)
Is your answer still Japan, or its a max of 5 years there?

I would go to the Dominican Republic
It's technically illegal to move there permanently, so you would have to buy a round trip ticket or open return. It's a nice country to live in, and you can do it for really cheap. A buck will fetch you a nice meal. I found that there is very little hostility towards Americans, and they are generally happy to have you around. There are plenty of American places to work as well. Most people buy a bike, usually a Yamaha Serow, and you can drive across the country in a matter of hours. The north coast is great. There is a ton of history, and it's beautiful up there. :wow:

Italy, probably the Florence area. Been on vacation there and love the place. Very bike friendly, people are very nice for the most part and the area has so much culture. The hard part would be finding a job.

Malaysia - one of the more modern cities, very affordable, English speaking. Not too bad.
But I'd rather commit suicide because their internet is slow :)

Either Canada or Hong Kong.
i like canada, but i would choose hk over canada. Albeit i already have hk citizenship =) But i love hong kong! great place...good people. a vibrant society. I love the hustle and bustle of the place and it just has TONS of energy. I do plan on moving back in the near future after i finish my masters.

Assuming I can't have my own little sovergn island in the middle of nowhere? I'd have to do some travelling and exploring, but the leading candidate would be:
Switzerland. I agree with thier politics. They don't bother anyone and nobody bothers them (for the most part). Beautiful mountains, climate I like, lots of culture and history.
Also would explore the Scandinavian countries, Tibet, a few others.

South Korea - Starcraft.
or
Honduras - Been there twice, once to a small island. I'd like to just live in that island.
or
Switzerland - For the reasons Napoleon mentioned.
or
Australia - I feel like this place would suit my adventurous personality. I love being outdoors and seeing grand sights along with wild animals.

Lets see....British Virgin Islands would probably be nice place to live. So would the Caymans, Fiji, or Tahiti.

Let's see...
UK - my family is from there, so I'd feel at home
France - maybe for a few years. They have a good handle on setting a strict separation between work and home life, and the home life seems to have the edge. Plus I appreciate their focus on food!
Canada - it's like 'America Lite', so why not?
Any of the Nordic countries - they seem to have a really high quality of life up there, if you ignore the crazy taxes, but I'd be afraid of learning the language.
Place I would not go?
Japan - I like to work my 8-10 hours & then go home. That does not fly in Japan.
India - OK for a short stint, but there's just too dang many people there. Plus I'd be afraid of driving there.
Any place in the middle east - you can make a ton of $$ there right now, but would you really want to be a US contractor there these days? I'd do a few stupid things for money, but risking my life is not one of them.

Italy - what choice is there if the US of A was off the table? I think Italy would be a blast.
I might choose HI. :P I know what you are thinking. You are thinking "HI is part of the US." :D You are right it is but if you ever lived there you would understand why I selected HI as place to live outside of the US.
New Zealand, Australia, or the UK would probably be next but I haven't even been to the first two, yet. I think they would be fun places to live in.
Germany, Canada, and Austria are also possibilities. Maybe some place in South America.
A few places I would not live:
Japan - It is a fun place to visit but it would get old always being a second class citizen and I do not like working 10+ hrs a day. You all would be surprised at how much they party. It is the only way they can keep from having their heads explode. It is very funny when the Japanese drink. I think they are more fun when they drink. I do enjoy their culture immensely, I just would not want to live here on a permanent basis. I do love their food, especially their sushi which I eat at least twice a week. I also think they have beautiful women and the service in Japan is impressive.
Switzerland - Another fun place to visit but I am not sure why anyone would want to live there unless they were from there. I think it is crazy when a country can around and do nothing. I will say that the Swiss are a super friendly people and I enjoyed every minute of the time I spent there.
I am not saying that people should or shouldn't want to live in the countries I listed above. I just don't understand why people would. To each their own. If it makes you happy, I say go for it.
France - definitely off my list. Although the people there were nice and the food was good, it was WAY overpriced and overrated. And I would hate to live in a country that surrenders to anyone that threatens them.
Sweden - Very nice people, decent food, and beautiful women. Unfortunately, their income tax rate is like 60% and you pay their VAT on your purchases.
I could list a ton of other places including the whole Middle East, Venezuela, Cuba, and Russia but I could go on all day about the places I do not want to live.
