I have a 4th gen iPod and it's been great up to this point. I've only dropped it twice. I'm not sure when it happened, but when I plug it in to the PC (running XP) itunes doesn't start automatically. I start it manually and it never recognizes that the ipod is plugged in and it freezes. The ipod told me I needed to reset to factory settings so I did that, and nothing. I tried plugging it into my wife's lap top and nothing. Her ipod works fine though. I tried going back a version of itunes and it started to load then I got the bubble in the corner that said that "Cannot Read From Or Write To Disk". Also, the back of it is running really hot. Is it just dead and time to get a new one?

hey! funny thing is, my iPod just died recently too! and its also a 4th gen iPod! (the color-screen, non-video iPod, right?) In fact, I first bought it nearly 3 years ago to this day.
When I turn on the iPod, it just gives me a sad iPod icon (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1373?viewlocale=en_US).
right now its just a very expensive paper weight brick.

Nah, mine's not that fancy. It's just a click wheel. Mine still turns on and everything, I just can't load any music on there. Sounds like mine is better off than yours...for now.

The drive is probably bad. I have an old 20gb 4th gen if you want it, just pay ship :P, last time I checked it was still working.

If it's really hot, that usually means the board fried or the battery did - based on your symptoms, I'd say it was the board.

Thanks!! That's quite a generous offer, but i'll pass so Cheesy can have it.
Apparently my wife hooked it up to her computer and it managed to load 2 songs, so i'll go home and try it again.
If I can't get it to sync up right i'll wait till it gets too hot and dies and then get a new one.
