I started counting calories starting September 1st. I've noticed that things I normally eat and think is healthier calorie wise is not. One slice of Costco pizza is 800 cal which is the same as a 12 inch cold cut trio from Subway. The homemade sandwich I ate with 2 slices of turkey and roast beef each is about 650 calories which is the same as one large bowl of Pho or the same as 3 crunchy tacos from Taco Bell.
It's early but I think it's an interesting experiment I'm conducting on myself. I started because I have high as a kite cholesterol and got a nice Homer size belly beginning to blossom. I keep track using Google Calendar and use the dailyplate.com to look up calorie information. I don't exercise normally but do take the stairs.
Anybody else tried doing this?

isn't saturated fats a bigger cause of cholesterol than calories?

If you're counting calories, cold cuts and processed meat is not the way to go. Very high in sodium.
I also found those 100 calorie snack packs are etremely high in sodium.
In addition I've learned that eating either oatmeal or Cheerios, even the Honey Nut will help your cholesterol, I thought it was nonsense, but it works.

All calories are not created equal. 400 calories of M&M's will probably not have the same effect as 400 calories of a chicken breast on whole wheat.

Proper diet will help with cholesterol, but proper diet + exercise will eliminate the problem.
IMHO - eliminate calorie counting, cut back on fatty & processed foods (don't elminate, cut back), & start exercising.
My family has notoriously high cholesterol counts & that forumla has worked for me. I've never been in the 'high' category, but I hover close to it. My doc says it's the exercise that keeps it low.

Taking baby steps. Reduce my calorie intake and *try* to keep the sodium and fats in mind when I decide what to eat. My goal is to have a BMI within the normal range (I'm only about 10 pounds away) and get my cholesterol in the moderate area. Currently I'm in the alien chest bursting category.
Deli meats not the way to go? Damn...just bought all this meat and bread. I'll try the Cheerios and maybe *ick* oatmeal. I'm allergic to nuts so that's a negative.
Thanks.

oatmeal is great. the instant stuff is crap (make some oatmeal cookies out of those things). Get some steel cut oats like:

and cook to instruction (adding dried fruits and the like). or you can even do it in a slowcooker. yummy.
taste and texture is completely diff than the rolled instant crap.

Meat in general is high in cholesterol. Fish, except for some shell fish like shrimp, is very good. As others have said, stay away from saturated fat and exercise and that should care of the problem.
Glad to hear you're tackling the problem. You'll be better for it in the long run.
