I know with gas prices, it's probably not the best time to do a cross country road trip, but I've always wanted to, and so, seeing what I can figure out - most likely for spring next year.
Has anyone done one for leisure? if so, which route did you take, how long did you take, and what were some must stop places.
I'm definitely looking for good eating along the way, so random local joint suggestions would be awesome as well.

My friend is into the "scene" and she does the AKA Rally every year:

This year it was NYC to Vegas, over the course of about a week. You drive from checkpoint to checkpoint, and when you get there, there's activities to do (whether partying, dirtbiking, ATVs, etc.). So it's not a hardcore competition to see who can cross the country the fastest.
However, she has told me that most of the people who do it are RICH beyond belief, and they just don't care about speeding tickets. Apparently one guy got got thrown in jail for speeding, and his car was impounded, but he just went out and bought another car the next day because he didn't want to deal with the paperwork. GEEZ. So, these people probably aren't my cup of tea, but there's a place for everyone I guess.

yeah..... not looking to do no rally... God knows I ain't that rich...
i drove across the country twice. once that a few of the "old timers" here might remember (when i moved from SD to philly), and the second when i brought my gf to meet the parents a couple years later.
the land is so dotted with interesting places that i didn't follow an agenda either time. if i do it again, i will probably wing it again :D

Went from Buffalo to yellowstone and back. I think the return trip was nonstop for 36hrs. As for places to see, the number is unlimited, just go with the flow and stop when you see something that looks cool.
