How hot/loud does your laptop get?

I am trying to get a feel if technology has improved over the past few years in this aspect.

I have a 2005 Dell Inspiron 9300 (17"). The fan is now much louder than it was originally, and this thing gets HOT. I'd like to get a new laptop soon, but if fan noise and heat is still a large issue, I'll probably wait it out.

When I read the title, I thought you where asking about the speakers.

I just picked up an HP Pavilion dv9910us (17"), about a month ago. It barely gets warm with the power cord, and you can't hear any fan noise at all.

The speakers still need external help. :D

I use Dell & Lenovo regularly, and I can tell you from my experience that Dell Inspiron with high end video cards are the loudest since they tend to run the hottest.

But there's a tradeoff - most of the noise & heat are generated by the video card. Well, I guess the noise is from the fan that's COOLING the video card, not the card itself...

If you want a QUIET machine, look at laptops with basic integrated video. They run much cooler & have less need for the cooling fans. If you want something REALLY quiet, look at a smaller machine with integrated video & SSHD. Even fewer things to cool down.

If you want a high end machine capable of 3D gaming, be prepared for it to be loud & hot.

I have a macbook pro. it used to be very quiet and very hot, but since I installed an app that allowed me to increase the minimum fan speed it has gotten a lot cooler, but the fan noise has gotten a bit more noticable, but not to the extent that i would notice it while working. this tweak probably affects my battery life, but i usually work in places that have power outlets so it doesn't matter.

I'm also using a macbook pro, some areas of the laptop reaches 118F last time I measured it. It runs pretty quiet though...

Newer Apple laptops are stupidly hot. Which is weird, because all the Apple laptops I used pre-white ibook were super cool.
