were do you shop at more ?
this story about Home Depot doing a price cut to improve sales made me think to ask those here on Gotapex. what store they like to shop at better?

i know i find for the most part home depot has great prices and i like the way they place home improvement items i need.
but i have found sometimes they are way off base on the price of items. some items are found at other stores a whole lot cheaper.

Home Depot is for real handymen/handywomen who just want the materials to build whatever they want. Lowes has prefab everything, and it can get pretty pricey. I just installed a closet system from materials purchased at both places and Lowes really drained my pocketbook.

I tend to hit Home Depot more often because it's on my way home. The problem is it's a smaller store and they don't have near the selection that another store in the area has. When I need a larger selection of stuff I usually find myself at Lowe's which is a little farther, but has a LOT more to choose from.

That said, I used Home Depot's Pro Desk for a large chunk of my home building purchases. I saved a lot that they normally don't offer folks, but then you also have to prepay for your purchase and usually have to spend at least 5k.

esDee - I also did some closet systems from HD using the Kraftmaid line of units. I got a bid from someone who used the exact same materials then went and purchased them and did the install for about 1200 less. Fun fun. :D

I like the products at Lowes better - we just tend to find things we like more there. But the HD near us is in a nice neighborhood, and the Lowes is in a shady neighborhood, so their quality of customer service reflects that.

I have spent more time at Lowes lately because it's closer. Last year however, I opted to buy our washer, dryer and fridge at Lowes because they had better prices and 12mo no interest financing. I also had price protection. My fridge dropped about $200 bucks in less than a month, so I was able to just go into the store, tell them and got a refund. I didn't even need to show proof. That was nice.

Honestly here... Lowes and Home Depot are pretty much the same as far as the products they offer and the prices for the offerings.

The biggest difference I see are:

1) Lowes has a few more people working the floor to assist you when you need advice on how to do something (I've walked around HD for several aisles before looking for help only to find someone who didn't know/couldn't help me anyway)

2) At HD, everything that is "store brand" is orange... HD just has WAY too much "orange" stuff. I'll sometimes go to Lowes just to avoid that (like when I needed a clean PVC bucket for my fish tanks... all of HD buckets were that sick orange color... whereas Lowes had white buckets for about the same price.

BTW... as far as closet systems go, recently Lowes got rid their "Closetmaid" pre-fab systems since HD picked that brand up. Lowes now carries "Rubbermaid" closet systems, however I do prefer the Closetmaid offerings.

I lived in a city with a Lowes but no Home Depot for a couple years. Pretty much monthly I would be in Lowes, wishing I had a Home Depot nearby.

Mostly Home Depot, but only because they are closer.

:stupid: HD is about 2 miles from my house. Lowes is probably 10 miles or more.

I live out in the sticks, so when I say it's closer, it is....But it's still nearly 20 miles away. The Lowes is somewhere around 30. :D

I love living in a rural area, but it's a pain sometimes. Especially this week, since I drove home from work Monday night and forgot to put gas in the car...The nearest station from my house with both power and gas was about 20 miles away. (Almost right across the street from the HD actually!) :shake:

Talking to a lady last night who works at Home Depot. She said the store she works in which is in the middle of a very wealthy area is very slow. They may make some full-timers part-timers. I guess the economy is affecting everything right now.

I live in a apartment. That I'm not allow to change.

I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've been to both of these stores on one hand.

I shop at Ace for 99% of what I need - it's closer, smaller & WAY friendlier and more helpful than the warehouse stores.
