Is there any reason I wouldn't want to buy an OEM version? I am going to rebuild a Win 2000 pro machine and want to move it to XP.
Thanks

The only reason I'd see that you would not want to use an OEM version is if you would ever rebuild your PC using a new motherboard.

Under the licensing agreement, a new motherboard that is significantly different than the original mobo when when the OEM license was put into effect would invalidate the license. You can replace a defective mobo for an identical mobo and keep the license in effect, however you can not legally transfer that license to another computer.

If that stipulation will not affect you, then go right ahead and use the OEM license.

Also be sure you're not buying an OEM license that's tied to a particular manufacturer. For example, you won't be able to use an OEM license from HP or Dell on your home built PC, because the install CD will check the BIOS to verify the manufacturer of the computer.

Thank you! So far I've been lucky with motherboards, but I will now regret admitting to that I'm sure. I was going to pick it up off Newegg so not a manufacturer license.
