NEW YORK (AP) — A Long Island, N.Y., family thought they got a good deal when they found a rental house for $1,000 a month — until the owner showed up and asked what they were doing there.

Nassau County police arrested Gregory Garvin on Wednesday for posing as a real estate agent and renting out the house in the hamlet of Roosevelt. Garvin was charged with grand larceny and fraud.

Police say Garvin also collected a $1,000 security deposit from the couple.

The family was living in the house about two weeks when the real owner showed up. http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2008/10/11/news/cops_and_courts/doc48ef796c7354e934041824.txt

Well, they are probably out about $500, since they lived there for two weeks.

I'm assuming they paid up front and are out $2000: 1k each for rent and security deposit. Maybe they'll eventually get it back in court, but then end up using it to pay their lawyer.

so, was the place furnished? or did the owner just never buy furniture? :hmm:
