Believe it or not, up to November 1st many could and still were buying licenses for Windows 3.x (mainly for embedded systems like cash registers and airline entertainment systems from companies like Virgin). But on that day, Microsoft discontinued their licensing of the product. After 18 years, the iconic Windows platform is no more.

Requirements for the OS included a 8086/8088 processor with clock speed of 10MHz, 7MB of storage (better move Police Quest to a floppy) and 640KB of RAM. And when you realize that Vista requires a minimum of 1GHz processor and 20GB of storage, it's easy to see why at least some low end systems will miss the platform...until they just grab a copy of Linux instead.

its odd but there are a ton of people out there. that even this program is more then they really need for a computer system .but have to buy the baddest system they can fine or latest and greatest just for bragging right's.

I don't know a single person running Win98 or 95, so I'm having a tough time believing there's a ton of people out there using it still. I was in middle school when we were using that OS. It seems kind of silly to hear someone whining about a product EOL'd after 18 years. Besides that, how much copy protection was in place? It's not like you're SOL.

Seeing those screenshots does bring back Quest 4 Glory memories...

I do have a WIN98 machine running, but it's not hooked up tto the internet and basically gets used for old games. When big brothers kick the youngest off the XBox360, the XBox, and the wife or I have to use the other computers he goes to the Win98 machine. God forbid they go out and ride bikes instead or something crazy like that.

Ahh, Windows 3.1 -- the first version of Windows I actually used.

Favorite thing: Chip's Challenge (part of the Entertainment Pack for Windows) -- I wasted away several hours playing that.... if only I could play it again. :(

Least-favorite thing: A cross between the dreaded GPF error (precursor to the Win9x BSOD), and Trumpet Winsock (the way I had to connect to my dial-up ISP).

Heh... I think I came in on Windows 3.0

Before that I used GEOS on a Commodore 64. :D

ha. That's kind of funny that anyone even cares. "move to linux" like it's some sort of affront that Microsoft would have the audacity to remove the ability to license the software lol.
